Gracie Abrams is comfortable being called a nepo baby<\/p>\n
The Close to You singer – whose is the daughter of writer and director J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot Production CEO Katie McGarth – doesn’t get upset when people link her success to her family connections because she’s aware of how helpful her “privilege” has been in getting her where she is today.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the New York Times’ Popcast podcast, she said: “The nepo stuff is obviously in the discourse appropriately.<\/p>\n
“I think about the privilege there, and it’s like, I had a safety net, and that allowed me the ability to experiment and to concentrate, and I had the gift of time to dedicate to doing this thing I loved.<\/p>\n
“I wasn’t growing up afraid financially, and that’s the biggest deal.<\/p>\n
\n“The specific household that I was born into, there is just this vocabulary that I’m so lucky to grow up with.<\/p>\n
\n “So like, when I see people pointing that out, it’s like, I get it, hard-core. The jokes and things, I understand the tone of the Internet.”<\/p>\n
\nThe 26-year-old star’s upcoming third album is titled Daughter From Hell, taking its name from a track on the record which Gracie wrote as an apology to her mom for being so “brutal” during her teenage years.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cIt felt like the first time I was able to write a song, but really write anything other than a text apologising to my mom for being so brutal growing up.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cObviously, adolescence is tough for the child and for the parent. I think my mom and I, we earned our relationship we have now, for sure. She is like, my favourite person. We FaceTime. I call her like six times a day.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nGracie has been in a relationship with Paul Mescal for two years and she doesn’t like “hiding” their romance.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “I don’t like the feeling of hiding. I also love privacy where it feels like the right thing…<\/p>\n
\n“That is a part of my life that brings me so much peace and joy. I’m not going to pretend like that’s not true, but I also think it’s not like an open-door policy.”<\/p>\n
\nThe Hamnet actor worked with her on a track for the album called Imaginary Friend and had a great time in the studio together.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “That was so fun to write together. That wasn’t some groundbreaking event for us. We have a very creative home with friends who are so good at what they do and everyone feels happy to share that with one another … <\/p>\n
\n“It’s such a simple, short song and it was really just us f******around … It just did feel natural.”<\/p>\n
