Barack Obama<\/a>, 64, in an interview with People, in which the couple looked back on the early days of their relationship in Chicago. <\/p>\nThe conversation comes after months of continued public interest in the Obamas following repeated speculation about their marriage, which both have publicly dismissed through joint appearances and interviews. <\/p>\n
Recalling Barack\u2019s modest home when they first began dating, Michelle said: \u201cWhen we started dating, he was renting a crappy little apartment on 53rd Street from a friend. No AC. Windows were open. Saturday nights would be crazy. Baskin-Robbins was a place we\u2019d go to get ice cream. He wrote about our first kiss being there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Barack added: \u201cSitting on the curb. There\u2019s a plaque there now. I don\u2019t know who put that up.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nLooking back on the beginning of their relationship, Barack said he immediately recognised Michelle\u2019s character.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cI knew almost immediately, and looks like I made a pretty good bet, that this was a one-of-a-kind woman with the integrity and character, smarts and values to make me better.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBarack continued: \u201cJust being with her made me better, and she still does. And that she would give our kids a foundation that would pay off for them \u2013 and that\u2019s in fact what\u2019s happened.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWhen asked whether their marriage had always been an equal partnership, Barack joked he had benefited more from the relationship than Michelle.<\/p>\n
\nMichelle rejected the suggestion, describing the way they complemented one another throughout their lives together.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cWe are each other\u2019s counterbalance.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nReflecting on what might have happened had they never met, Michelle said: \u201cThe truth is I probably would have been someone who stayed more put. Because I think I grew up with such a grounding here in Chicago that sometimes when you\u2019re so grounded, you\u2019re sometimes afraid to leave that security and comfort. And I might have fallen into that, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cI think I would have had a beautiful life here but it would have been smaller. I think I wouldn\u2019t have had the kind of impact. But because of who my husband is, he offered all of us \u2013 our girls, my mom, my family \u2013 a broader sense of what\u2019s possible in life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMichelle also credited Barack with encouraging her to look beyond a conventional legal career after graduating from Harvard Law School.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cHe made me think more broadly about what I could do with this Harvard law degree, besides be a lawyer. He gave me the courage. He was my ballast. He was like, \u2018I got you\u2019. And however hard it\u2019s been, the ups and downs, he\u2019s got me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBarack responded by describing the balance he believes has defined their marriage.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cAnd she grounds and anchors me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWith a smile, he added: \u201cIt\u2019s worked out a\u2019ight.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe couple have often spoken publicly about the realities of balancing marriage, parenthood and public life while raising daughters Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24.<\/p>\n
