He becomes friends with his supervising officer, Danilov (<strong>Joseph Fiennes<\/strong>), but the two men soon face a bump in their bromance \u2013 they both love Tania (<strong>Rachel Weisz<\/strong>), a private with a knack for translating German. Based on the nonfiction book <em>Churchill\u2019s Secret Warriors<\/em> by Damien Lewis, the movie stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/henry-cavill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Henry Cavill<\/strong><\/a> as real-life war hero Gus March-Phillipps, who led a covert mission to destroy an Italian supply ship near a Spanish-controlled island. Gus can\u2019t do it alone, so he assembles a dirty half-dozen of rogue officers like Anders Lassen (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/alan-ritchson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Alan Ritchson<\/strong><\/a>) and Marjorie Stewart (<strong>E\u00edza Gonzalez<\/strong>) to help him.<\/p>\n<p>Director <strong>Guy Ritchie<\/strong> plays fast and loose with some of the facts, including adding several gunfights and explosions that never actually happened. He gets his chance when he is assigned to command the USS <em>Nerka<\/em>, but the Navy forbids him to go after the <em>Akikaze<\/em>. And each generation of filmmakers has been adding their own sensibilities to the genre. There are now so many war movies that even some of the best in the genre have gotten lost in the shuffle. That\u2019s why Watch With [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Two dudes battling it out on a submarine? If Run Silent, Run Deep sounds a little like the 1995 Cold War thriller <em>Crimson Tide<\/em> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/gene-hackman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gene Hackman<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/denzel-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Denzel Washington<\/strong><\/a>, you\u2019re right. Both movies feature two stars locked in a battle of wills while torpedoes are being shot at them thousands of feet underwater. But <em>Run Silent, Run Deep<\/em> is even more intense, with crisp back and white cinematography lending a patina of realism to its purely fictional story. At the tail end of his career, Gable gives one of his best performances ever as an officer who is no gentleman. That\u2019s the question <em>Nuremberg<\/em> grapples with as it depicts the beginning of the Nuremberg trials in 1945. Hitler\u2019s second-in-command, Hermann G\u00f6ring (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/russell-crowe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Russell Crowe<\/strong><\/a>), is accused of mass murder, and the prosecution needs to determine if he\u2019s mentally fit to stand trial. After U.S. Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/rami-malek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rami Malek<\/strong><\/a>) examines him, he doesn\u2019t quite believe a man so civil to him \u2013 and caring for his family \u2013 could commit such atrocities. There really was a Claus von Stauffenberg, and he almost pulled off an act that would have saved millions of lives. (It shouldn\u2019t be a spoiler to reveal that Claus was <em>not<\/em> successful in assassinating Hitler.) Cruise is miscast as an eye-patch-wearing German officer, but he\u2019s also oddly right at home spying on others and staging daring acts of subterfuge.
