Australia <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/12\/07\/as-australia-bans-social-media-for-kids-under-16-age-assurance-tech-is-in-the-spotlight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">became the first<\/a> to implement such measures at the end of last year, setting a precedent that other countries are now closely watching.\u00a0The U.K. is the latest country to announce that it will <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/06\/15\/uk-unveils-sweeping-social-media-ban-for-users-under-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">impose a ban on social media<\/a> use for children. U.K. prime minister Keir Starmer\u00a0the ban\u00a0on June 15.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The regulations and proposals being brought forth by governments around the world aim to reduce the pressures and risks that young users may face on social media, which include cyberbullying, addiction, mental health issues, and exposure to predators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, there are concerns about privacy regarding invasive age verification and excessive government intervention. Critics, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/12\/australia-social-media-ban-for-children-and-young-people-an-ineffective-quick-fix-that-will-not-prevent-online-harms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Amnesty Tech<\/a>, have said such bans are ineffective and that they ignore the realities of younger generations. Despite this, many nations are moving ahead with proposed legislation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve compiled a list of countries that are considering or have already moved forward with bans on social media for young users.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-australia\">Australia<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia became the world\u2019s first country to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cwyp9d3ddqyo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ban social media<\/a> for children under 16 in December 2025. The ban blocks children from using Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit, Twitch, and Kick. It notably doesn\u2019t include WhatsApp or YouTube Kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Australian government has said these social media companies must take steps to keep children off their services.\u00a0Companies that fail to comply may face penalties of up to $49.5 million AUD ($34.4 million USD).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government says these platforms should use multiple verification methods to ensure that people using their services are older than 16. It also notes that they can\u2019t rely on users simply entering their own age.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-austria\">Austria<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Austria said in late March that it will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cwyv70de9exo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ban social media<\/a> for children up to the age of 14. Draft legislation for the ban is expected to be finalized by June.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-canada\">Canada<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Canadian government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/canada-introduces-legislation-ban-social-media-children-under-16-2026-06-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">introduced a digital safety bill<\/a> in early June that would ban social media for children under 16. Under the legislation, social media giants could sidestep the ban if they demonstrate they have policies to protect young users. Officials have said it could take a year for the bill to pass.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-denmark\"><strong>Denmark<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Denmark is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/denmark-social-media-ban-australia-1e96a3df3276cc2033a6f04effb89f51\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">set to ban<\/a> social media platforms for children under 15. The Danish government announced in November 2025 that it had secured support  for the ban from three governing coalition parties and two opposition parties in parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government\u2019s plans could become law as soon as mid-2026, according to the Associated Press.\u00a0The Danish digital affairs ministry is also launching a \u201cdigital evidence\u201d app that includes age verification tools that may be used as part of the ban. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-france\"><strong>France<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late January, French lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/27\/france-social-media-ban-under-15s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">passed a bill<\/a> that would ban social media for kids under 15. President Emmanuel Macron has supported the measure as a way to protect children from excessive screen time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill still has to get through the country\u2019s Senate before a final vote in the lower house.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-germany\"><strong>Germany<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early February, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz\u2019s conservatives discussed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/germanys-cdu-weighs-social-media-age-curbs-under-16s-2026-02-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">proposal to bar<\/a> children under 16 from using social media, Reuters reported. However, there were signs that his center-left coalition partners were hesitant to support an outright ban.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-greece\"><strong>Greece<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced in April that the country is going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/ckgx1x742x5o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ban access to social media<\/a> for children under 15 starting January 2027. Mitsotakis says the move is aimed at tackling rising anxiety and sleep problems among children, as well as the addictive design of social media.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-indonesia\">Indonesia<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indonesia said in early March that it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cvg50168ddgo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">banning children under the age of 16<\/a> from using social media and other popular online platforms. The country plans to start with platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-malaysia-nbsp\"><strong>Malaysia\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Malaysian government said in November 2025 that it plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/asia\/malaysia-says-plans-ban-social-media-users-under-16-starting-2026-rcna245562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ban social media<\/a> for children under 16. The country plans to implement the ban this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-poland\">Poland<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poland\u2019s ruling party is drafting new legislation that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-02-27\/poland-plans-social-media-ban-for-kids-in-challenge-to-us-tech?embedded-checkout=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ban children under 15<\/a> from using social media, Bloomberg reported in February.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-slovenia\"><strong>Slovenia<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slovenia is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/slovenia-preparing-law-ban-access-social-media-minors-under-15-2026-02-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">drafting legislation<\/a> to prohibit children under 15 from accessing social media, the country\u2019s deputy prime minister announced in early February. The government wants to regulate social networks where content is shared, citing platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-spain\"><strong>Spain<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain\u2019s prime minister announced in early February that the country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/spain-hold-social-media-executives-accountable-illegal-hateful-content-2026-02-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">plans to ban<\/a> social media for children under the age of 16. The ban still needs parliamentary approval. The Spanish government is also seeking to create a law that would make social media executives personally accountable for hate speech on their platforms.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-turkey\">Turkey<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Turkish parliament in April <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/turkey-social-media-children-restrictions-law-d88963a7446a12cf4963b73d455b5ef7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">passed a bill<\/a> to restrict social media access for children under 15. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan must now accept the bill for it to pass into law.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uk\"><strong>UK<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.K. prime minister Keir Starmer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/social-media-to-be-banned-for-under-16s-in-landmark-government-move-to-givekids-their-childhood-back\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">announced<\/a>\u00a0on June 15 that his government will impose a ban on social media use for children under 16 years of age. The ban would apply to a range of social media platforms, including Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram,\u00a0Facebook,\u00a0and X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal will not be included in the ban. There are also going to be limitations on AI tools, as AI \u201cromantic companion\u201d chatbots will have to ensure they are only usable by people over 18.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts have questioned whether a blanket ban would be effective. Starmer has acknowledged the challenges but said he believes it\u2019s possible to enforce it.
