Or, a better question might be: Do you believe in movies about aliens?<\/p>\n<p>The sci-fi genre is littered with them and some of the very best are from maestro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/steven-spielberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Steven Spielberg<\/strong><\/a> (<em>E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind<\/em>). His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/what-is-disclosure-day-about-alien-film-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Disclosure Day<\/em><\/a> (in theaters starting Friday, June 12) is a throwback in the best way. While it isn\u2019t a direct sequel to any of his films, viewers won\u2019t have to squint too hard to find an obvious thematic through line to much of his previous work.<\/p>\n<p>The acclaimed director, working off his own original story (with a script by <strong>David Koepp<\/strong>), has a jubilant winner here that despite a few weaker plot details will make even the biggest skeptic a believer. While the box office increased slightly from 2024\u2019s total, several high-profile movies, like Marvel\u2019s Thunderbolts and Paramount\u2019s The Running Man, underperformed. There\u2019s a reason for that \u2014 they weren\u2019t as good as many people, including myself, expected them to be. 2026 promises to be different. Project Hail [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Daniel (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-news\/news\/alison-oliver-avoids-question-about-josh-oconnor-dating-speculation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Josh O\u2019Connor<\/strong><\/a>) is a whistleblower on the run from some shady characters (including a menacing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/colin-firth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Colin Firth<\/strong><\/a>). To reveal much more about Daniel and Margaret\u2019s strange connection would spoil things, but let\u2019s just say that Spielberg asks viewers to imagine what it would mean to discover that we\u2019re not alone. Could the world be trusted with such information? Would it bring people together or further divide them? Moviegoers can probably guess where Spielberg is likely to land on that question, but just because you know a destination doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not worth taking the journey.<\/p>\n<p>Racing against the clock, the intense <em>Disclosure Day<\/em> is full of giant set pieces (including a thrilling train scene reminiscent of <em>Indiana Jones<\/em>) that will delight viewers of all ages.<\/p>\n<p>Aliens may or may not be real. But where <em>Close Encounters<\/em> tapped into the mystery of all this with an innocence that was both starry-eyed and spectacular, <em>Disclosure Day<\/em> feels like a thriller docudrama that\u2019s too cut-and-dried about what it believes. The actors are quite good (especially Blunt, who makes you feel she\u2019s seeing the uncanny), but for all the film\u2019s slow build it doesn\u2019t take us anywhere overly surprising.
