Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny<\/em> does not feature Indy\u2019s son, Mutt Williams, but his absence doesn\u2019t go unexplained. [Spoilers ahead!]<\/p>\n Mutt, played by Shia LaBeouf<\/strong><\/a>, was introduced in 2008\u2019s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull<\/em> as a 1950s greaser who was looking for his abducted mother and turned to everyone\u2019s favorite archaeologist for help. Indiana (Harrison Ford<\/strong><\/a>) helped reunite Mutt with his mom\u00a0 \u2014 only to realize that she is his ex-girlfriend Marion Ravenswood (Karen Allen<\/strong>), who never told her former flame that they were expecting a child.<\/p>\n Despite making Mutt such a pivotal character in Crystal Skull<\/em>, the 2023 sequel doesn\u2019t include LaBeouf\u2019s character, despite taking place 12 years after they first met. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny<\/em><\/a> \u00a0<\/span>\u2014 which takes place 12 years after the father-son pair met \u2014\u00a0<\/span>reveals that Mutt died.<\/p>\n When Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge<\/strong><\/a>) asks Indiana where he would go if \u00a0used\u00a0Archimedes\u2019 dial<\/span>, which\u00a0is believed to\u00a0take\u00a0people\u00a0<\/span>through time, the explorer says <\/span>he\u2019d prevent Mutt from enlisting in the military. He voluntarily served in Vietnam, which Indiana claims was just a move to irritate him. Mutt\u2019s death was the beginning of the end of Indiana and Marion\u2019s marriage.<\/p>\n Prior to the movie hitting theaters on June 30, director James Mangold<\/strong> promised Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> in December 2022 that viewers would \u201cfind out what happened\u201d to Mutt. (News broke five years prior that LaBeouf would not reprise his role.)<\/p>\n Earlier this month, Mangold, 59, explained that he was more interested in giving Indiana a female companion, who arrives in the form of his goddaughter, Helena.<\/p>\n \u201cI think the point I had was that when I came on, I wanted to capture that wonderful energy between Indy and an intrepid female character,\u201d Mangold told Variety<\/em><\/a> ahead of the film\u2019s release. \u201cSo that was my first goal, and there\u2019s only so many people you can edge into a picture.\u201d<\/p>\n It may not have been a surprise to diehard fans that LaBeouf, now 37, was not invited to return after he criticized his installment of the franchise in a 2010 interview with the Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI feel like I dropped the ball on the legacy that people loved and cherished,\u201d LaBeouf said at the time. \u201cIf I was going to do it twice, my career was over. So this was fight-or-flight for me. The actor\u2019s job is to make it come alive and make it work, and I couldn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n He added: \u201cI\u2019ll probably get a call. But he needs to hear this. I love him. I love Steven<\/strong> [Spielberg<\/strong><\/a>, director of Crystal Skull<\/em>]. I have a relationship with Steven that supersedes our business work. And believe me, I talk to him often enough to know that I\u2019m not out of line. And I would never disrespect the man. I think he\u2019s a genius, and he\u2019s given me my whole life. He\u2019s done so much great work that there\u2019s no need for him to feel vulnerable about one film. But when you drop the ball you drop the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n Ford, now 80, famously slammed LaBeouf for openly taking shots at their movie. \u201cI think I told him he was a f\u2013king idiot,\u201d the Star Wars<\/em> actor said during a 2011 appearance on Today<\/em><\/a>. \u201cAs an actor, I think it\u2019s my obligation to support the film without making a complete ass of myself.
