W<\/em> The rise of FinOps<\/span> already fueled multiple acquisitions, including IBM\u2019s plan to acquire Apptio for a whopping $4.6 billion, but I bet there\u2019s more to come. And there\u2019s another trend I\u2019m sure we\u2019re not done hearing about: parametric insurance. \u2014 Anna<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n When cloud optimization startup ProsperOps raised a $72 million funding round<\/a> last February, my colleague Kyle Wiggers argued that consolidation in this space wasn\u2019t necessarily over.<\/p>\n Sure, several cloud optimization companies had been nabbed by incumbents over the years, from Cloudyn\u2019s acquisition by Microsoft in 2017 to CloudHealth Technologies\u2019 purchase<\/a> by VMware in 2018. But more could still follow, Kyle argued, citing Intel\u2019s 2022 $650 million purchase of Granulate<\/a> as evidence.<\/p>\n He was right: In a busy week for M&A news<\/a>, IBM announced its intent to buy Apptio from its current private equity owner for $4.6 billion in cash. In 2019, Apptio itself had acquired Cloudability<\/a>, a cloud spending management vendor. Reporting on IBM\u2019s announcement, Ingrid Lunden noted<\/a> that Apptio\u2019s activities fall into a broader category.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
