In March 1997, members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2020\/12\/heavens-gate-cult-of-cults-docuseries-hbo-max?srsltid=AfmBOoqYGu27YsVm62vMwCIE2kLG_QWUbP9MJrDdjYMRzc5xWkixzJIZ\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"noopener\">Heaven\u2019s Gate cult<\/a> visited a Carlsbad, California, restaurant for their last supper\u2014identical orders of iced tea, salad, turkey pot pie, and cheesecake. Days later, everyone sitting around the table would be found dead in a home in nearby Rancho Santa Fe, a secluded, wealthy part of San Diego otherwise known for decorative citrus orchards, horse stables, and its elite country club. What remains the largest mass suicide in the US left 39 people dead. Later that year, it was parodied <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cracked.com\/article_43390_saturday-night-lives-most-tasteless-sketch-featured-footage-of-real-life-corpses.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cracked.com\/article_43390_saturday-night-lives-most-tasteless-sketch-featured-footage-of-real-life-corpses.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cracked.com\/article_43390_saturday-night-lives-most-tasteless-sketch-featured-footage-of-real-life-corpses.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by Will Ferrell on <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em><\/a> and referenced by Jodie Foster in the sci-fi film <em>Contact.<\/em> Now the story of the cult is fictionalized in <em>The Leader,<\/em> which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday, June 5.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga play founders Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, respectively; Applewhite, a Texas music teacher, met Nettles in the early 1970s at a psychiatric institution where she worked as a nurse. In September 1975, Applewhite visited a small town in Oregon to lecture its residents about how and why UFOs were visiting Earth. (Nothing suggests the name is connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2010\/04\/ciminos-final-cut-200203?srsltid=AfmBOor0E2PdeCplxru6PyiNU3GriqTXuLiSxqrpCE99vrlEVMNPtmRz\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Cimino\u2019s notorious 1980 box office flop<\/a> of the same name.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Dozens who believed the couple abandoned their lives, dropped out of polite society, and joined the cult. \u201cA score of persons\u2026have disappeared,\u201d Walter Cronkite said on the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/www.nytimes.com\/library\/national\/mag.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/www.nytimes.com\/library\/national\/mag.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/www.nytimes.com\/library\/national\/mag.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">October 8, 1975, episode<\/a> of <em>CBS Evening News.<\/em> \u201cIt\u2019s a mystery whether they\u2019ve been taken on a so-called trip to eternity\u2014or simply been taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">After stints in various states including New Mexico and Colorado, the group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2020\/09\/california-cults-nxivm-the-vow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"noopener\">eventually settled in California<\/a>. According to <em>The Washington Post,<\/em> Applewhite, the son of a Presbyterian minister, had been fired as a music professor at the University of St. Thomas in 1970 after administrators learned he was in a relationship with a male student. He and Nettles didn\u2019t preach free love, instead advocating for total sexual abstinence among their followers, two of whom are played by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2021\/07\/red-rocket-movie-review-simon-rex-cannes?srsltid=AfmBOop62N2cAVjtoN9Jl4mjAvP_D75kDXLdFAkFZlVPXxSaL2GvnyE1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"noopener\">Simon Rex<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/topic\/jim-parsons?srsltid=AfmBOoohCrVStT92VaDweOg_ll0b91ztSsxX6nmsT-1UnJWflVOb837H\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Parsons<\/a>.
