Mayim Bialik had negative side effects after using GLP-1 injections<\/p>\n
The former Big Bang Theory actress was advised to try \u201cone shot of the lowest dose of a synthetic GLP-1″ in a bid to tackle the symptoms of various autoimmune conditions she suffers from, but experienced a wide range of negative side effects.<\/p>\n
In an essay for The Free Press titled My GLP-1 Nightmare, Mayim wrote: “[I experienced] explosive, uncontrollable diarrhoea. Sulfur burps so violent, they left me afraid to open my mouth in public. <\/p>\n
“Sneezing attacks every time I tried to eat or drink\u2014which apparently has a name: snatiation.<\/p>\n
\u201cCramping. Bloating. Full-body aching, as though I had the flu. And an inability to keep down even small sips of water without sprinting to the bathroom with yet more explosive diarrhoea. More than three times, I didn\u2019t make it.<\/p>\n
\n \u201cTo say I had an adverse reaction would be somewhat of an understatement.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe 50-year-old star sought advice from a gastroenterologist, who reassured her the \u201cdramatic\u201d symptoms were not unusual.<\/p>\n
\nShe wrote: \u201cThese medications, he said, are extremely disruptive to the body and should not be used outside of a specific, regulated set of serious medical reasons\u2014namely, life-compromising obesity and its related health consequences. I did not meet that bar.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe doctor also suggested other medications the Blossom actress was taking may have contributed to the side effects.<\/p>\n
\nMayim was diagnosed with Graves’ disease at the age of 23 and later also told she had connective tissue disease, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), Sj\u00f6gren\u2019s syndrome and dysautonomia.<\/p>\n
\nAnd as a result, the actress – who has Miles, 18, and 15-year-old Frederick with ex-husband Michael Stone – was prescribed the weight loss drug after \u201ca doctor told me it might help ease symptoms I\u2019ve struggled with for basically my entire adult life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe wrote: \u201cA few months ago, three separate doctors all suggested I try a GLP-1.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cNot because of the 20 postmenopausal pounds but because the drugs have shown promise in reducing the systemic inflammation that drives autoimmune conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBut despite her own experiences of the drugs not being the “magic cure” she had hoped for, the Jeopardy! presenter insisted they aren’t all bad.<\/p>\n
\nShe wrote: \u201cGLP-1s have helped people in serious need. Of that I am certain. But nobody talks much about what happens when it goes wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
