Mayim Bialik<\/strong><\/a> is opening up about her \u201cGLP-1 nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up in the limelight, with my appearance scrutinized weekly from the time I starred in my own NBC show at 14,\u201d Bialik, 50, began in a lengthy essay for The Free Press<\/em><\/a> published on Friday, June 5. \u201cI was blissfully unaware of my weight back then. I was naturally lanky and athletic, and I ate whatever I wanted with no concern for weight gain.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress, who rose to fame with her starring role in NBC\u2019s sitcom Blossom<\/em><\/a> in 1990, explained that she was \u201cput on medication\u201d to manage her mood when she was a teen, which led her to gain weight.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy my 40s, still actively working as an actress, I acquired a deep sense of shame around my body. At a size 6, I felt obese,\u201d she continued. \u201cBy the time social media arrived \u2014 with its fixation on being thinner, more toned, more surgically perfected \u2014 that pressure tipped into a disordered relationship with food that I have spent years trying to untangle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tInfluencer Carly Weinstein opened up about using a GLP-1 to lose weight after being a \u201cbody positive influencer.\u201d \u201cIf you told me five months ago I\u2019d be talking about this, I would tell you, \u2018You\u2019re crazy,\u2019\u201d she started off in a Tuesday, April 28, TikTok video. \u201cI was so embarrassed and ashamed that I felt [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bialik added that she put on an additional 20 pounds in the last several years due to early menopause, and she has struggled to shed the weight.<\/p>\n

\u201cStill, that\u2019s not why I went on a GLP-1<\/a>,\u201d the Big Bang Theory<\/em> alum wrote. \u201cI went on a weight-loss drug because a doctor told me it might help ease symptoms I\u2019ve struggled with for basically my entire adult life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bialik explained that she was diagnosed with Graves\u2019 disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes the thyroid gland to produce excessive hormones, when she was 23 years old. She was prescribed a medication but did not make any diet or lifestyle changes, which she believes may have \u201cvery slowly made my condition worse.\u201d She was later also diagnosed with connective tissue disease, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), Sj\u00f6gren\u2019s syndrome and dysautonomia.<\/p>\n

\u201cA few months ago, three separate doctors all suggested I try a GLP-1,\u201d she wrote. \u201cNot because of the 20 postmenopausal pounds but because the drugs have shown promise in reducing the systemic inflammation that drives autoimmune conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though Bialik hoped that a GLP-1 would be her \u201cmagic cure,\u201d she ended up having a negative experience with the medication.<\/p>\n

\u201cGLP-1s have helped people in serious need. Of that I am certain. But nobody talks much about what happens when it goes wrong,\u201d she warned.<\/p>\n

Describing the extreme side effects she experienced on the lowest dose, Bialik continued, \u201cExplosive, uncontrollable diarrhea. Sulfur burps so violent, they left me afraid to open my mouth in public. Sneezing attacks every time I tried to eat or drink \u2014 which apparently has a name: snatiation. Cramping. Bloating. Full-body aching, as though I had the flu. And an inability to keep down even small sips of water without sprinting to the bathroom with yet more explosive diarrhea. More than three times, I didn\u2019t make it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though Bialik said she \u201cwould not blame\u201d anyone for wanting to power through the side effects, she realized that the medication was not right for her body.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I could say I\u2019m in the clear, but I\u2019m not. This drug has a very long half-life; my prescribing doctor had told me to expect at least a week of this, if not more,\u201d she noted, recalling once having to \u201cfrantically\u201d pull off a highway to find a convenience store bathroom.<\/p>\n
