President\u00a0Joe Biden<\/strong> is visiting the southern border for the first time during his presidency on Sunday.<\/p>\n The president is set to visit El Paso before arriving in\u00a0Mexico City for an international summit<\/a> on Monday and Tuesday.\u00a0\u201cThe president\u2019s very much looking forward to seeing for himself firsthand what the border security situation looks like,\u201d said John Kirby<\/strong>, White House national security spokesman. \u201cThis is something that he wanted to see for himself.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n In the fiscal year 2022, there was a record-breaking\u00a02.4 million migrant encounters<\/a> at the southern border. Of Border Patrol\u2019s sectors along the Mexico border,\u00a0El Paso has become the busiest<\/a> in recent months.\u00a0<\/p>\n The visit comes a few days after Biden announced new migration policies on Thursday, expanding the use of\u00a0Title 42<\/a>, a\u00a0Donald Trump<\/strong>-era policy that gives border agents the ability to quickly expel migrants at the border\u00a0without the chance to claim asylum<\/a>. (The Supreme Court will hear arguments about Title 42 in February, after it temporarily\u00a0upheld the policy<\/a>\u00a0in December.)<\/p>\n The new policies simultaneously aim to\u00a0accept\u00a030,000 people per month<\/a> from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela for two years if they have a financial sponsor and pass background checks.\u00a0<\/p>\n “We can\u2019t stop people from making the journey, but we can require them to come here … in an orderly way under U.S. law,”\u00a0Biden<\/strong> said during a speech at the White House.<\/p>\n A number of immigration experts criticized the new policies.<\/p>\n Dylan Corbett<\/strong>, executive director of El Paso\u2019s Hope Border Institute, lambasted the new policy, calling it \u201cdangerous, ineffective, and inhumane policy.\u201d He added,\u00a0\u201cFor once, just once, I\u2019d like to see this administration make the moral argument to the rest of the country that we need to put in place an\u00a0effective, humane, accessible, welcoming, and compassionate system of protection<\/a> at the border.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis week\u2019s policy announcements are\u00a0completely out of touch with the actual circumstances<\/a> of people seeking asylum, many of whom arrive at our border fleeing imminent threats to their lives,” said\u00a0Melissa Crow<\/strong>, Director of Litigation at the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies.<\/p>\n Even Democratic Mayor of New York\u00a0Eric Adams<\/strong>,\u00a0a Biden supporter<\/a>, was disappointed by the president\u2019s new policies:\u00a0“This is a real problem that we’re facing<\/a> and we need to raise that level of I believe what we need to do to resolve the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile,\u00a0Ron DeSantis<\/strong>, the Republican governor of Florida who is suspected to be a 2024 Trump challenger,\u00a0activated the Florida National Guard<\/a>\u00a0on Friday after over\u00a0300 migrants<\/a> arrived on January 1, according to a statement by DeSantis.<\/p>\n \u201cAs the negative impacts of Biden\u2019s lawless immigration policies continue unabated, the burden of the Biden administration\u2019s failure falls on local law enforcement who lack the resources to deal with the crisis,\u201d DeSantis said on Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
