Rosie O\u2019Donnell<\/strong><\/a> went under the knife earlier this year for a procedure<\/a> that she swore she would never get.<\/p>\n

\u201cI used to feel very strongly about facelifts,\u201d O\u2019Donnell, 64, wrote in a lengthy poem titled \u201cDecisions\u201d and shared via her Substack<\/a> on Monday, May 25. \u201cNot casually \u2014 morally. I had assigned myself as head of all women who would never \u2014 ever [get one].\u201d<\/p>\n

The comedian added that she previously believed getting a facelift was a \u201cbetrayal\u201d of feminism and aging. However, her opinion began to change when she lost 50 pounds.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t wrinkles \u2014 it was gravity. I\u2019d look in the mirror and think, \u2018This isn\u2019t aging, this is melting with intention,\u2019\u201d she continued. \u201cI tried to be evolved about it and say things like, \u2018This is natural. This is earned.\u2019 And then \u2026 \u2018Umm, how earned does it have to look?\u2019 There\u2019s a point where acceptance starts to feel like lying.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Donnell said she began quietly \u201cgathering information\u201d about the procedure, but her child Clay, 13, found out and tried to talk her out of it. (In addition to Clay, O\u2019Donnell is a mother to four other children: Vivienne<\/strong>, Blake<\/strong>, Chelsea <\/strong>and Parker<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018You earned your wrinkles,\u2019\u201d she recalled Clay telling her. \u201cWhich \u2014 first of all \u2014 rude. But also \u2026 correct. Then Clay said, \u2018Young women look up to you.\u2019 And finally \u2014 with strong effect \u2014 \u2018I wouldn\u2019t be able to respect you if you did it.\u2019 And that one \u2026 landed.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Donnell explained that Clay sounded \u201cexactly\u201d like her younger self.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike my younger, more certain, more morally rigid self had somehow moved into my house and was now judging my face,\u201d she added. \u201cIt really threw me. I delayed the whole thing for months, just sitting with it, thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Donnell said she ultimately realized she needed to teach Clay that bodies do not \u201cbelong to an idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause that\u2019s still not freedom \u2014 that\u2019s just a different authority telling you what you\u2019re allowed to do with your own face,\u201d the Rosie Show alum noted. \u201cI want [Clay] to grow up in a world where they don\u2019t feel like they have to change, but also know they can, if they want to, without losing moral standing in their own life.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Donnell finally underwent the procedure in January after finding a doctor who had worked on some of her friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight before I went under, I grabbed my doctor\u2019s hand and said, \u2018I will never say, \u2018God, I wish you did more.\u2019\u201d And I meant it,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to become that voice \u2014 the one that keeps moving the goalpost, never satisfied, the one that turns their own face into a problem one can never quite solve. I wanted a limit. I wanted to still be me, just \u2026 less haunted. And I do look like me \u2014 A slightly more well-rested, emotionally stable version of me.\u201d<\/p>\n
