The Chase Sapphire Reserve\u00ae<\/a><\/span> (see rates and fees<\/a><\/span>) has rolled out the best welcome bonus<\/a><\/span> we’ve seen in the card’s history<\/a><\/span>: Earn 150,000 bonus points after spending $6,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.<\/p>\n

Per TPG’s May 2026 valuations<\/a><\/span>, this Sapphire Reserve bonus is worth $3,075, making this an excellent time to apply if you’ve been considering the card.<\/p>\n

But some applicants hoping to get in on this stellar offer are running into an unexpected issue: A Chase Sapphire Reserve pop-up warning telling them they’re not eligible for the welcome bonus.<\/p>\n

What does this Sapphire Reserve bonus eligibility pop-up actually mean? And why are some applicants, including former Sapphire Reserve cardholders, seeing it now?<\/p>\n

To better understand what’s happening, we’re breaking down a real-world example from TPG editor-in-chief Nick Ewen<\/a><\/span>, whose wife recently encountered the pop-up while applying for the card. Here’s what you need to know.<\/p>\n

What is the Sapphire Reserve bonus eligibility pop-up?<\/h2>\n

We’ve seen multiple reports of applicants being stopped by Chase’s Sapphire Reserve<\/a><\/span> pop-up during the application process.<\/p>\n

Nick’s wife was one of these unlucky applicants. She’d had the Chase Sapphire Preferred\u00ae Card<\/a><\/span> (see rates and fees<\/a><\/span>) since 2021 and was looking to add the other personal Sapphire product now, given the fantastic 150,000-point bonus.<\/p>\n

She completed the application process and immediately saw the pop-up indicating she wasn’t eligible.<\/p>\n

That’s when Nick said it hit him. His wife had actually opened the Sapphire Reserve in 2017, around the time the card featured a 100,000-point launch offer (no longer available).<\/p>\n

After a year, she downgraded it to a Chase Freedom Unlimited\u00ae<\/a><\/span> (see rates and fees<\/a><\/span>), and Nick picked up his own Sapphire Reserve after he fell under 5\/24<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Nick said his long tenure with the Sapphire Reserve made him forget that his wife had once held the card as well. But, since she was a cardholder nearly a decade ago, she was not eligible for the current 150,000-point bonus.<\/p>\n

What to do if you get a pop-up saying you’re not eligible for the Sapphire Reserve welcome bonus<\/h3>\n

Chase lets you cancel your application with no impact on your credit score if you see the eligibility pop-up and realize you won’t qualify for the bonus.<\/p>\n
