LOS ANGELES, May 26 (Reuters) \u2013 Nicolas Cage<\/strong><\/a> says his new live-action series Spider-Noir <\/em>will offer viewers a distinctive experience, with the option to watch it in black and white \u2014 \u201clike an old movie\u201d \u2014 or in highly saturated color designed to heighten visual intensity. He hopes the noir presentation will engage younger audiences who may be less familiar with black-and-white films.<\/p>\n

Film noir, a 1940s American style, is known for its cynical protagonists, crime-driven plots, and existential themes. Cage, 62, said he crafted his performance as the title character, specifically for black and white, calling the dual-format release \u201ca little revolutionary.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series, developed by Oren Uziel<\/strong> for Prime Video and MGM+, is based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man Noir.<\/em> It follows an older, hard-edged Peter Parker \u2014 here named Ben Reilly \u2014 working as a private investigator in 1930s New York while confronting his past.<\/p>\n

Cage stars alongside Lamorne Morris<\/strong> as newspaper editor Robbie Robertson, Li Jun Li<\/strong> as nightclub singer Cat Hardy, and Brendan Gleeson<\/strong> as Irish mob boss Silvermane.<\/p>\n

After being inspired by the character\u2019s popularity in Sony\u2019s animated Spider-Verse<\/em> films by Phil Lord<\/strong> and Christopher Miller<\/strong>, Uziel was keen to bring the duo on board as producers of Spider-Noir<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that character really popped in those (Spider-Verse<\/em>) movies, and they (Lord and Miller) were excited to try and create a standalone show for it,\u201d Uziel, 51, said.<\/p>\n

Cage, Uziel, and Gleeson all hope the show brings Marvel and noir audiences together, introducing younger viewers to the genre while drawing noir fans into the superhero world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would hope it\u2019ll open up a world for both directions,\u201d Gleeson, 71, said, noting his optimism that Spider-Verse<\/em> fans will gravitate toward some noir films and vice versa.<\/p>\n
