The round also included new investors Ribbit Capital, Atreides, and Layer Global.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a giant vote of confidence from top-tier VCs that there will be room for independent AI software coding startups. Last year, all signs pointed to model makers swallowing this hot market themselves. Certainly Anthropic\u2019s Claude Code, OpenAI\u2019s Codex, and maybe even Google\u2019s coding agent Jules, (after <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/08\/01\/more-details-emerge-on-how-windsurfs-vcs-and-founders-got-paid-from-the-google-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google\u2019s acqui-hire deal of Windsurf<\/a> last year), have captured a lot of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Cognition, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/07\/14\/cognition-maker-of-the-ai-coding-agent-devin-acquires-windsurf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which acquired the remaining bits of Windsurf last year<\/a>, says it counts big enterprises like Mercedes-Benz, NASA, Goldman Sachs, and Santander as customers.
