Miley Cyrus<\/a> has added to her menagerie of animals with a new arrival – a tortoise. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n

The 33-year-old singer took to her Instagram Stories at the weekend to tell fans she had rescued a 20-year-old sulcate tortoise – also known as an African spurred tortoise, called Teru. <\/p>\n
The \u201cstars aligned\u201d to allow the rescue mission to take place, after nonprofit dog rescue organisation Wags and Walks heard that Miley was keen to add a tortoise to her army of pets. <\/p>\n
Sharing a snap of Miley feeding Teru a yellow paper, Wags and Walks wrote alongside it on Instagram: \u201cYou truly never know who you’ll find in a shelter. When we heard that\u00a0@mileycyrus\u00a0was hoping to adopt a tortoise, we knew we had to make the connection happen. After a little coordination, the stars aligned, and Teru officially found his forever home with Miley.\u201d<\/p>\n
The adoption happened after Teru spent time in the shelter system. <\/p>\n
\nWhile his situation was unusual, it\u2019s not unheard of, the rescue organisation explained. <\/p>\n
\nThey added in the caption: \u201cAs unexpected as this rescue was, it’s also a reminder of the reality shelters are facing right now. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnimals of all kinds are ending up in overcrowded systems, and more pets than ever are in need of safe places to go.”<\/p>\n
\nMiley also shared the image on her Instagram Stories, alongside the words \u201cWelcome home Teru\u201d. <\/p>\n
\nIt\u2019s believed that Miley has 14 living pets, including eight dogs, three cats and two horses. <\/p>\n
\nIn an interview with Buzzfeed, Miley previously opened up about how she treats her pets. <\/p>\n
\nAsked what she would say to the animals if they could understand her, Miley replied: \u201cI would hope that all of them know how much that I love them, but I have no doubt in my mind that they do. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cBecause I treat them better than my own family members.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMiley has also used her fame to encourage others to turn to shelters to find their perfect pet, urging fans to \u201cadopt, not shop\u201d. <\/p>\n
\nShe adopted for the first time during lockdown as part of the Covid-19 pandemic, and has since turned to local shelters to rescue other animals to add to her growing family.<\/p>\n
