\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Rami Malek<\/strong><\/a> is playing a gay man in the new movie The Man I Love<\/em><\/strong> alongside Tom Sturridge<\/strong><\/a>, another straight actor. <\/p>\n The film earned rave reviews during its premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival<\/em> last week<\/a> and now director Ira Sachs<\/strong> is opening up about the positive reception for the film. <\/p>\n In an interview with Variety<\/a><\/em>, Ira<\/strong> discussed casting straight actors to play gay roles in his film. <\/p>\n The movie is described as a \u201cmusical fantasia of a city under duress\u201d and it takes place during the AIDS crisis in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n Set in the vibrant era of late 80s New York, the film follows Jimmy George, a Downtown performance artist in an extraordinary moment between great illness and death when, still, all beauty and love is possible.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Also starring in the movie are Rebecca Hall<\/strong><\/a> and Ebon Moss-Bachrach<\/strong><\/a>, who were not at the premiere.<\/p>\n Sachs <\/strong>told Variety<\/em>, \u201cI don\u2019t ask people who they\u2019ve slept with, and what I have found out is you never know.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI am a gay man, and I primarily make movies about gay men,\u201d he added later in the interview. \u201cEvery time I make a movie, I\u2019m overturning the idea of what is interesting to people because the dominant culture says our lives are not interesting. That\u2019s something I refuse to accept.\u201d<\/p>\n He also opened up about why he cast Rami<\/strong>. He said, \u201cFrom Mr. Robot.<\/em> In that series, he had this very natural, easy kind of acting in which I couldn\u2019t see the beginnings and ends of his sentences, and I was curious about it. He\u2019s also such a unique presence.
