At a time when the city was on the financial brink and with disco fever on its way out, hip-hop began its rise to the mainstream, and orphaned teenager\u00a0 Zeke Figuero (<strong>Justice Smith<\/strong>) sets out on his dream to be a successful musician. Director<strong> Baz Luhrmann<\/strong> <em>(Elvis, Romeo +<\/em> <em>Juliet<\/em>) teams up with top-notch collaborators like <strong>MC Nas<\/strong>, <strong>Grandmaster Flash<\/strong> and playwright <strong>Stephen Adly Guirgis<\/strong> in this compelling, music-infused drama.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Get Down<\/em> is a bold and stylish series that was unfairly axed by Netflix after only one season, but its sole season is a true work of art. Smith leads the show confidently alongside an ensemble of terrific actors such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/jaden-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jaden Smith<\/a><\/strong>,<strong> Shameik Moore<\/strong>,<strong> Yahya Abdul-Mateen II<\/strong> and <strong>Jimmy Smits<\/strong>. With Luhrmann\u2019s signature maximalist touch, the show leans hard into spectacle, with impressive visuals, sweeping emotions and a killer soundtrack.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Brand New Cherry Flavor\u2019 (2021)<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Brand New Cherry Flavor: Limited Series | Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wOzM3c33TVg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/tv\/brand_new_cherry_flavor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rotten Tomatoes score: 76 percent<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1990s Hollywood, aspiring filmmaker Lisa Nova (<strong>Rosa Salazar<\/strong>) arrives in the movie capital of the world to meet a high-powered producer (<strong>Eric Lange<\/strong>) who was impressed by her short horror feature. After signing a contract that guarantees Lisa the autonomy to direct a feature film, she is dropped from the project when she rejects the producer\u2019s unwanted sexual advances. To get revenge on him (and get her movie back on track), Lisa makes a deal with a witch named Jennifer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-news\/news\/dermot-mulroneys-marriage-history-inside-the-actors-divorces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Catherine Keener<\/strong><\/a>) \u2014 but every wish that seems too good to be true always is, and Lisa is pulled into a surreal nightmare.<\/p>\n<p>This series from <em>Channel Zero<\/em> creator <strong>Nick Antosca<\/strong> is strange, unusual and totally goes for broke. <em>Brand New Cherry Flavor<\/em> is confidently led by Salazar in a show that isn\u2019t afraid to go to some dark (and disgusting) places, diving headfirst into the uncanny by blending horror with drama and a satire of the film industry. Lange and Keener round out a terrific cast that also features <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/is-manny-jacinto-married-5-things-about-the-freakier-friday-star\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Manny Jacinto<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/shows\/the-good-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Good Place<\/em><\/a>)<em>,<\/em> <strong>Patrick Fischler<\/strong> <em>(Mulholland<\/em> <em>Drive<\/em>) and <strong>Gabriel LaBelle<\/strong> <em>(The Fabelmans<\/em>). Downs<\/strong><\/a>. Fans of Robinson\u2019s series\u00a0<em>I Think You Should Leave<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Detroiters<\/em> will certainly find a lot to love here, but what makes the show so great is that each episode is in the control of one particular comedic voice, with every sketch tailored to their sensibilities. As a result, you get something totally different each time, and the series features multiple different kinds of comedy: from cringe realism to full-on absurdist scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Though not every sketch in <em>The Characters\u00a0<\/em>lands, when they land, they <em>really\u00a0<\/em>land, such as <strong>Natasha Rothwell<\/strong>\u2018s \u201cChiggers,\u201d Early\u2019s \u201cThe Toast\u201d and Robinson\u2019s \u201cSammy Paradise,\u201d all three of which made it onto <em>Vulture\u2019s<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2019\/12\/best-comedy-sketches-of-the-decade.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 list<\/a> of \u201cBest Comedy Sketches of the Decade.\u201d The show stands as a terrific showcase of some of the best comedic voices of the past ten years, who were at that point still fairly early in their careers.
