John Mulaney always praised SNL’s guest hosts<\/p>\n
The two comics admitted they frequently tried to boost the egos of their star guests by telling them they had “crushed” their opening monologues, even if more often than not they had “tanked”.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the Netflix is a Joke Festival, John – who was a writer and made occasional appearances on the show from 2008 to 2013 – admitted: \u201cWhen I was 25, I\u2019d tell Oscar-winning hosts \u2014 I\u2019d write their monologue and be like, \u2018You\u2019re gonna say all that, it\u2019s gonna go great,\u2019 and they\u2019d tank eight times out of 10.”<\/p>\n
Pete laughed and admitted he also told host they had “crushed it”, no matter how well they had performed.<\/p>\n
John continued: \u201cThey\u2019ll have actor face. They sort of don\u2019t get it, because they\u2019re just an actor.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd they\u2019d be like, \u2018Hey, was that good?\u2019 And you\u2019re like, \u2018No! Do you have ears?’\u201d<\/p>\n
\nPete – who was a cast member from 2014 to 2022 – used to offer advice to the clueless hosts.<\/p>\n
\nHe recalled saying: \u201cYou\u2019re really performing for the people at home.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nJohn added: \u201c\u2018Play for the camera. The audience, they\u2019re just there to help you, but they\u2019re not gonna laugh a lot.’\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnd The King of Staten Island actor Pete also lied about the make-up of the live audience to make things easier on the guest hosts.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “I always would go: \u2018They\u2019re tourists. They wait outside and they try to win a lottery. Half of them probably don\u2019t even speak English.\u2019 They do. They\u2019re big fans of the show; they camp outside.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnd John, who has returned to host SNL six times over the year, recalled a time when a “very big comedy star bombed”.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: “His own fault because he was very difficult writing the monologue.”<\/p>\n
\nAnd even though the guest had been difficult, John still lied when he asked if he was bad.<\/p>\n
\nHe recalled: \u201cI went: \u2018It\u2019s bad acoustics.\u2019 It\u2019s famously one of the best mic\u2019d sound studios in the world. It used to be home to the NBC [Symphony] Orchestra.\u201d<\/p>\n
