\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Shakira<\/strong><\/a> is reflecting on the emotional aftermath of her breakup from former soccer star Gerard Piqu\u00e9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The 49-year-old Grammy-winning singer opened up in a new interview with The Times<\/a><\/em>, published on Friday (May 22), where Shakira<\/strong> described the split as \u201cthe darkest moment\u201d since it led to \u201cthe dissolution of [their] family.\u201d<\/p>\n Shakira<\/strong> and Gerard<\/strong> were together for 11 years from 2010 to 2022 and share two children together, Milan<\/strong>, 13, and Sasha<\/strong>, 11.<\/p>\n During the same period she was navigating the breakup, Shakira<\/strong> was also caring for her father after he suffered a severe fall when flying to Barcelona to be by her side amid the breakup, making the chapter especially difficult.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps in an unforeseen way a wiser person\u2014or stronger, at least,\u201d Shakira<\/strong> shared. \u201cThey say that what doesn\u2019t kill you makes you stronger and it is true. It\u2019s amazing to learn that humans have a resilience that we can resort to at any moment in our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The \u201cHips Don\u2019t Lie\u201d singer went on to reflect on how hardship changed her perspective.<\/p>\n \u201cSometimes through hardships and through pain is how we discover how strong we can be. Suffering sometimes makes you a better person, makes you value friends and support,\u201d Shakira<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The multi-time Grammy winner added that while \u201clife sometimes can be a b\u2014h,\u201d it is \u201calso beautiful and made of light and shadows.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSo I thank life for every single moment, the bright ones and the dark ones, the people who have made me suffer because they have become my masters who have taught me lessons, very valuable lessons,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n Even years after the breakup, Shakira<\/strong> said she still feels gratitude toward Gerard<\/strong> for their family and the life they built together.<\/p>\n Four years after their split, Shakira<\/strong> shared that she will \u201calways have that gratitude in [her] heart for the father of [her] kids,\u201d while also crediting the relationship with making her \u201cthe mother that [she] is today.\u201d<\/p>\n At this stage in her life, Shakira<\/strong> said her focus remains on her children and career, not romance.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s no space or time in my life for that.
