Rachael Leigh Cook<\/strong><\/a> has been one of Hallmark\u2019s leading ladies<\/a> since 2016 \u2014 but she almost didn\u2019t sign on with the network after questioning her personal brand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really credit the Hallmark Channel with my pivoting into producing in earnest,\u201d Cook, 46, said during the May 13 episode of the \u201cI Love You So Much \u2014 ILYSM<\/a>\u201d podcast.<\/p>\n

The actress noted that she began working for them a decade ago, but she \u201cwasn\u2019t sure how that was going to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne disagreement Daniel <\/strong>[Gillies<\/strong>]<\/a>, my ex-husband, and I always had was he was like, \u2018You can\u2019t handle challenging content!\u2019 And I was like, \u2018That\u2019s not true!\u2019 That was 100 percent true. Daniel, you win,\u201d Cook recalled, noting that her so-called brand and aversion to darker story lines almost made her pass on Hallmark\u2019s offer.<\/p>\n

Cook confessed, \u201cI cannot handle channeling content, so my resistance to working for the Hallmark Channel \u2014 is that I thought it was a little bit too soft.\u201d<\/p>\n

She remembered thinking, \u201cIt was sort of playing into my fears that I had about myself. Then I was just like, \u2018Ah, screw it. This is who I am.\u2019 I\u2019m a huge cornball. I love love<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The She\u2019s All That<\/em><\/a> star noted that once she was honest with herself, she realized that Hallmark\u2019s heartwarming stories were exactly what she wanted to work on both in front and behind the camera.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went and worked for them and they\u2019re so supportive of women, of their actors,\u201d Cook said of the network. \u201cThey\u2019re honestly also just doing so much that they don\u2019t handcuff you to the words, to the punctuation, to the stuff. They really give you a lot of creative freedom. That was really empowering.\u201d<\/p>\n

She recalled Hallmark\u2019s belief in her work as a producer as the spark that \u201csort of set me on a journey of wanting to tell stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cook also revealed that Hallmark\u2019s rom-com focused lineup perfectly aligns with what she likes to watch herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been so earnestly enthusiastic about the romantic comedy genre. I drink that Kool-Aid all day. I make it in my kitchen. It\u2019s in my veins,\u201d she said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Cook made her Hallmark Channel debut in 2016\u2019s Summer Love<\/em>. That same year she portrayed Frankie Baldwin alongside Brendan Penny<\/strong>\u2019s Nate Deluca in Autumn in the Vineyard<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The actors\u2019 connection sparked two more In the Vineyard<\/em> movies<\/a> and made Cook a staple for the network. Autumn in the Vineyard<\/em> was also Cook\u2019s first credit as an executive producer for Hallmark and she has since worked behind the scenes on multiple projects for them.<\/p>\n
