Love on the Spectrum<\/em> star Abbey Romeo<\/strong> celebrated her 28th birthday the Caribbean way \u2014 and Us Weekly<\/em> got an exclusive look inside her surprise party at Beaches Turks & Caicos.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was epic. It was awesome,\u201d Romeo, 28, told Us<\/em> of her poolside surprise at the resort on Saturday, May 16. \u201cElmo came to surprise me!\u201d<\/p>\n

While visiting the island to celebrate the opening of Treasure Beach Village at Beaches Turks & Caicos, Romeo was treated to a visit by the Sesame Street<\/em> character, a mermaid and a cake alongside her mom, Christine Romeo<\/strong>, and cousin Mary Romeo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Of course, Abbey had fun donning a mermaid tail herself and swimming alongside her new \u201cbuddy\u201d mermaid, though the Netflix personality told Us<\/em> the mythical creatures have a deeper significance in her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe number one thing is that I really connected to them as a little girl because mermaids wanted to be on dry land and I wanted to be mainstream,\u201d she explained to Us<\/em>. \u201cThe story of Ariel, I really identified with her as a kid because she felt lonely. She wanted to be part of the human world, and I wanted to be part of a typical school.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cWhen she got to land, she could not talk when she was human. That\u2019s how I used to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abbey attended an autism school when she was younger, and she told Us<\/em> she came home one day and proclaimed, \u201cI have no voice, just like Ariel.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Abbey has come a long way since then.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many different kinds of autism,\u201d she told Us<\/em>. \u201cI had 22 years of speech therapy to get where I am today.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to her poolside birthday party, Abbey got to swim with her mermaid tail in the \u201cbeautiful, crystal clear blue water,\u201d meet new friends and even explore the resort\u2019s waterpark \u2014 all by herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first day I got here, I decided to go to the water park all on my own,\u201d she explained to Us<\/em>. \u201cThat felt amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not only does Abbey feel confident on her own at the resort, but her mom, Christine, also feels comfortable letting her do her own thing.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tChad Michael Murray, Kelly Bensimon and more celebs brought their undeniable star power to the Caribbean for the grand opening of Treasure Beach Village at Beaches Turks & Caicos \u2014 and Us Weekly was there to soak in every moment. The action-packed weekend culminated on Saturday, May 16, with the Treasure Beach Village Bash, complete [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAbbey feels very safe at the resort, and I feel safe letting her try things,\u201d Christine told Us<\/em>. \u201cThat kind of growth is so substantial. And it\u2019s lovely to be able to come to a place where you know that your loved one is safe, even though they have neurological differences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Year 27 was major for Abbey: From singing at the Hollywood Bowl to attending the premiere of the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special<\/em>, to running her hat business and releasing her new single, \u201cRight Here Right Now,\u201d the special moments and milestones were never-ending.<\/p>\n
