Anderson Cooper<\/strong><\/a> is officially off the clock.<\/p>\n

The journalist signed off his final episode of the CBS news program 60 Minutes<\/em> on Sunday, May 17, after nearly 20 years as a correspondent.<\/p>\n

As he parted from the long-running series, Cooper, 58, expressed his hope that 60 Minutes<\/em> \u201cremains 60 Minutes<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s very few things that have been around for as long as 60 Minutes<\/em> has and [have been able to] maintain the quality that it has,\u201d Cooper said, per Variety<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThings can always evolve and change, and I think that\u2019s awesome, and things should evolve and change, but I hope the core of what 60 Minutes<\/em> is always remains. I think the independence of 60 Minutes<\/em> has been critical.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the trust it has with viewers is critical to the success of 60 Minutes<\/em>. When you see a 60 Minutes<\/em> story, and you\u2019re like, \u2018That was a really good story.\u2019 It was a good story because it requires time, it requires patience, it requires money,\u201d he added. \u201cI hope that\u2019s known and honored and valued and continues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cooper joined 60 Minutes<\/em> during the 2006-2007 television season. He has juggled his correspondent role with his position as an anchor at CNN.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole time I\u2019ve done pieces on 60 Minutes<\/em>, my full-time job has been over at CNN, and still is,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s been really challenging to do the kind of work you need to do to have a great 60 Minutes<\/em> piece on. CNN doesn\u2019t like it if I take a lot of time off to work on a 60 Minutes<\/em> piece, so I\u2019ve worked mostly for 60 Minutes<\/em> on weekends. My vacation time at CNN has been working on 60 Minutes<\/em> pieces. I\u2019ve loved it, but it\u2019s been tough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cooper first announced his exit<\/a> from the CBS program back in February.<\/p>\n
