Off Campus<\/em> author Elle Kennedy<\/strong> weighed in on the Prime Video show adapting her book series<\/a> \u2014 with some major changes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would hope that book fans go into it with an open mind. The fandom for this series tends to be positive. They love these characters and they love this world,\u201d Kennedy exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em>. \u201cI just came back from a book tour and literally every stop it was just constant excitement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kennedy was hopeful about the reaction from viewers.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI do think that they\u2019re going to love it,\u201d she noted. \u201cI hope that they\u2019re going to go into it knowing some things have to change in an adaptation. But they\u2019re going to get the same feeling that they got when they read the book.\u201d<\/p>\n

Based on the Off Campus<\/em> book series by Kennedy<\/a>, the show, which premiered Wednesday, May 13, follows an elite ice hockey team \u2014 and the women in their lives \u2014 as they \u201cgrapple with love, heartbreak, and self-discovery \u2014 forging deep friendships and enduring bonds while navigating the complexities that come with transitioning into adulthood,\u201d read the official synopsis.<\/p>\n

Season 1 is centered around the \u201csexy and fun \u2018opposites attract\u2019 romance between quiet songwriter, Hannah, and Briar University\u2019s all-star hockey athlete, Garrett.\u201d (In addition to. Ella Bright <\/strong>and Belmont Cameli<\/strong>, the show introduces characters played by Mika Abdalla, Antonio Cipriano, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Josh Heuston <\/strong>and Stephen Kalyn<\/strong> as well.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t involved in the day to day process. I wasn\u2019t in the writer\u2019 room, and I didn\u2019t have casting decisions,\u201d Kennedy explained to Us. \u201cI did get to read the scripts as they were being written and I was able to, like, offer feedback. And sometimes we get on a zoom with the showrunners because they did appreciate the author\u2019s input.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPrime Video is leaving Cousins Beach \u2014 and headed to Briar University with its next TV adaptation. The streamer, the home of the recently wrapped The Summer I Turned Pretty, has also adapted Elle Kennedy\u2019s bestselling Off Campus series. \u201cI still can\u2019t believe it\u2019s happening,\u201d Kennedy gushed via Instagram in July 2025. \u201cI\u2019m so excited [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She continued: \u201cThey would say, \u2018What are non-negotiable scenes or things that you know have to be in there?\u2019 They were collaborative in that sense. But in terms of final decisions, that was completely up to the creative team there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite providing feedback, Kennedy told Us<\/em> she didn\u2019t have \u201cspecific\u201d requests about what should make it onscreen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went into this knowing they\u2019re going to have to change certain things. Every adaptation has that \u2014 especially because the book is written in first person so you\u2019re getting their thoughts a lot. They have to find different ways to show it,\u201d Kennedy shared. \u201cI just honestly wanted to see the relationship dynamics be captured. \u2026 I want to see the relationships. I want to see the characters in whatever situations they\u2019re in.\u201d<\/p>\n
