Hayden Panettiere has discussed her experience of child stardom<\/p>\n
The 36-year-old actress began her full-time career in 1994, when she played Sarah Roberts in the soap opera series One Life to Live, and Hayden has now recalled developing a business-like relationship with her mother, Lesley Vogel, who managed her career at the time.<\/p>\n
The actress – who has also starred in TV shows such as Nashville and Heroes – told the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast: “Everything was business. I became the confidant and the assistant and the therapist and the shoulder to cry on and everything but her child.”<\/p>\n
Hayden eventually worked up the courage to sever their professional relationship with her mom when she was 19.<\/p>\n
The Heroes star said: “I said to her, ‘I don’t want us to work together anymore. I just want you to be my mom.'”<\/p>\n
\nHayden also admitted that the response she received left a lasting impact.<\/p>\n
\nThe TV star said: “I remember being hopeful. But I also wasn’t expecting the reaction that I got, which was, ‘You owe me.’ And that’s all she said. And she walked out.”<\/p>\n
\nHayden said the exchange haunted her as she wondered what form of “payment” her mother expected, and admitted it was “disappointing to find out that it was money”.<\/p>\n
\nShe shared: “The fact that she didn’t care to have a relationship with me was a tough pill to swallow.”<\/p>\n
\nMeanwhile, Hayden previously admitted that child stardom took a toll on her mental health.<\/p>\n
\nThe actress also recalled feeling like an “outsider” among her friends.<\/p>\n
\nShe told People: “I was four years old when I was on Guiding Light. And I did a bunch of commercials before that. So taking some time off after Nashville was important.”<\/p>\n
\nHayden worked consistently from the age of eight months, and she ultimately decided to take a break from the entertainment industry in order to focus on her own needs.<\/p>\n
\nThe actress – who previously battled with depression – said: “I literally hadn’t taken a break from the industry since I was like, eight months old.<\/p>\n
\n“It was difficult. It’s difficult to keep up with your friends, to stay in the groove. I was the outsider.”<\/p>\n
