The revelation comes in an email thread that\u2019s part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23768244\/ftc-microsoft-activision-blizzard-case-news-announcements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>FTC v. Microsoft<\/em> hearing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cWe (Microsoft) are in a very unique position to be able to go spend Sony out of business,\u201d said Booty in a December 2019 email, referencing spending $2 billion or $3 billion in 2020 to avoid competitors getting ahead in content at a later date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cIt is practically impossible for anyone to start a new video streaming service at scale at this point,\u201d said Booty, referencing competitors like Google, Amazon, and Sony. Booty described content as a moat and that only Sony could really compete with Xbox Game Pass:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote ewrhy32 ewrhy30\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy35 ewrhy33\">In games, Google is 3 to 4 years away from being able to have a studio up and running. Amazon has shown no ability to execute on game content. Content is the one moat that we have, in terms of a catalog that runs on current devices and capability to create new. Sony is really the only other player who could compete with Game Pass and we have a 2 year and 10 million subs lead.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Microsoft argues the email is old and that it never pursued such a strategy anyway. \u201cThis email is three and a half years old and predates the announcement of our acquisition by 25 months,\u201d says David Cuddy, general manager of public affairs at Microsoft, in a statement to <em>The Verge<\/em>. \u201cIt refers to industry trends we never pursued and is unrelated to the acquisition.\u201d The internal exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/06\/20\/exhibit-k-microsoft-activision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was also sealed<\/a> as part of a separate so-called \u201cgamers lawsuit\u201d recently.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The email is part of a thread discussing Xbox Game Pass, with the rest of the chain redacted. Microsoft has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/9\/22319124\/microsoft-bethesda-acquisition-complete-finalized\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since acquired Bethesda<\/a> for $7.5 billion and is trying to get its $68.7 billion proposed Activision Blizzard deal over the line.
