Mark Harmon<\/strong> is shedding a little light on going from being the lead on NCIS<\/em><\/a> to working more behind the scenes<\/a> on NCIS: Origins<\/em> \u2014 and the Gibbs of it all.<\/p>\n

In Us Weekly<\/em>\u2019s exclusive sneak peek at the Tuesday, May 5, episode of the \u201cNCIS: Partners & Probies<\/a>\u201d podcast, Harmon, 74, details what it\u2019s like \u201cexploring a character to with someone else portraying it\u201d after passing the torch of Leroy Jethro Gibbs to Austin Stowell<\/strong><\/a> on NCIS: Origins<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wait to be asked. I\u2019m not going to dive in there and say anything unless you ask me,\u201d Harmon says, referring to how he has stepped back and let the newcomers take the reins<\/a> after originating the Gibbs character<\/a> on NCIS<\/em> in 2003.<\/p>\n

Harmon, who is an executive producer on Origins<\/em>, notes, \u201cYou\u2019d be surprised by how many people don\u2019t ask.\u201d<\/p>\n

He adds that it\u2019s \u201cOK\u201d if the new cast doesn\u2019t necessarily lean on him as a performance guide, even though he played Gibbs for 19 seasons before his 2022 exit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a different way of doing it. Not the way I did it, but that doesn\u2019t make it right,\u201d Harmon says, revealing that the Origins<\/em> cast is well-versed in the lore of the NCIS<\/em> franchise<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt didn\u2019t take long for Mark Harmon to share his opinion about Austin Stowell\u2018s performance as Leroy Gibbs in CBS\u2019 NCIS: Origins. \u201cHe gave it to me right away in the room,\u201d Stowell, 39, quipped during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly. \u201cHe was vocal about \u2014 maybe not what to do \u2014 but certainly [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cPart of this is being surrounded by talented people and allowing them to do their job individually and trusting that,\u201d he shares while talking with podcast hosts and his former castmates Brian Dietzen<\/strong><\/a> and Diona Reasonover<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cIf you\u2019re asked, you help. Or try to. Whether you\u2019re asked or not is not really the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harmon points out, \u201cThis is a different show. Very different, certainly, than the mothership. Different group of actors. All of whom have done their homework. All of whom have studied the original and seen so many episodes they can\u2019t see straight.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Origins<\/em>, which premiered in 2024, is an entirely new group of actors, Harmon says the showrunner is a familiar face.<\/p>\n

\u201cA guy like David North<\/strong> was in that room in the beginning as a script runner,\u201d Harmon explains, recalling that North worked his way up to writer on NCIS<\/em> after realizing there weren\u2019t any finished scripts during the second season.<\/p>\n

Harmon remembers North writing a \u201cfull script\u201d for season 2 of the flagship series in 2003<\/a>, which solidified his place on the show. \u201cFor us on set that was the first full episode we\u2019d seen since the pilot,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n
