Peter Morgan’s hit British series, The Crown<\/em>, might soon make a comeback. The dramatic take on the history of the British royal family<\/a> ran for six seasons, ending in 2023<\/a>. But don’t expect the further adventures of Kate Middleton<\/a> and Prince William<\/a>, or more on the departure of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry<\/a>. Instead, the next iteration of The Crown<\/em> will reportedly detail fifty years of history, from the death of Queen Victoria<\/a> in 1901 up to the subject of the first season, the wedding of then-Princess Elizabeth<\/a>.<\/p>\n The news comes from The Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>, which cites \u201ca well-placed source\u201d as saying \u201cNetflix has been locked in negotiations with the company for quite a long time about this spin-off series, but they’ve recently finally managed to seal the deal and come to an agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n Neither Netflix, nor Morgan, nor production company Left Bank Pictures have confirmed the report. But it’s not the first time we’ve heard rumblings that The Crown<\/em> would ride again. The Mail<\/em><\/a> had a similar report of an in-the-works prequel in 2022, and, in 2024, Morgan told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m done with the subject\u201d and that \u201cI might find some way of coming into it from a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n Even then, he appeared to be considering an earlier point in history, saying at the time that \u201cIf you go back in time, you always have that wonderful opportunity for metaphor. You can find a story in the past and tell that, and it [will] actually be a story about the present, but in camouflage.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued, \u201cThat, I think, might be a more elegant way forward. To move forward from where I left the show off at the moment feels too soon.\u201d<\/p>\n If the Mail<\/em>‘s report is accurate, Morgan’s chosen time period fulfills his desire for metaphor. From royal scandals, multiple wars, and the rise of fascism, the early 20th century is fertile ground for drama.<\/p>\n \u201cPeter had already been putting pen to pad and casting is expected to take place next year,\u201d the Mail<\/em> quotes its source as saying.
