Charlize, who has built a career spanning prestige drama and blockbuster cinema, including roles in Atomic Blonde and The Italian Job, made the remarks during an appearance on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast about her adopted daughters Jackson, 12, and August, nine.<\/p>\n
The A-lister, who has spoken extensively about raising them as a single mother, outlined her approach to parenting as focused on independence and work ethic by saying: \u201cFirst of all, your first car is going to be a Datsun because you\u2019re going to crash it.\u201d <\/p>\n
She added: \u201cYou\u2019re going to f*** it up somehow. You\u2019re a new driver. So, we\u2019re not getting, like, the nice car up front. We need a little bit of experience, and we\u2019re going to earn it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nCharlize also addressed the question of financial support for her kids. <\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cIt\u2019s too soon to kind of say where they\u2019re going to end up \u2026 they just need to get a job that pays them because I don\u2019t want to support them for the rest of (my) life.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nReferring to the idea of early work experience for her kids, she added: \u201cYeah. Every time we go to Starbucks, I\u2019m like, \u2018Look at this\u2026 do you see how friendly? You have to be that friendly every morning at 6am, like start getting ready for it\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHer comments follow previous interviews in which Charlize has discussed her decision to raise her children independently. <\/p>\n
\nIn a July 2025 appearance on Call Her Daddy with Alex Cooper she described the choice as deliberate.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cWith women, it\u2019s always, like, \u2018Something must be wrong with her\u2019. \u201cShe can\u2019t keep a man, and it\u2019s never part of the discussion of like, \u2018Wow. She\u2019s really living her truth.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nCharlize also spoke about the autonomy she feels in her personal life. <\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI look at (my children) and just be like, \u2018Do you know how f****** great it is to live exactly how I want to live, to experience motherhood exactly how I wanted to experience it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cI love that I don\u2019t have to run every f****** thing by a guy\u201d and said she felt she had \u201cbroke the cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nCharlize recently made global headlines by opening up about how her mother, Gerda, killed her alcoholic and abusive father in 1991, stating that her mum saved their lives and saying she is not ashamed to talk about it. <\/p>\n
\nShe described the incident \u2013 which saw her mother shoot her dad \u2013 as a justified act of self-defense after he came home drunk and launched into violent threats.<\/p>\n
