The attack began on Thursday, and affected services that Ubuntu users rely on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCanonical\u2019s web infrastructure is under a sustained, cross-border attack and we are working to address it. We will provide more information in our official channels as soon as we are able to,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/status.canonical.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the company said<\/a> on its website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hacktivists are believed to have launched a distributed denial-of-service, or <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/25\/techcrunch-reference-guide-to-security-terminology\/#distributed-denial-of-service-ddos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DDoS<\/a>, a crude but often effective attack that consists of flooding a target with junk traffic until it overloads or crashes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ubuntu developers <a href=\"https:\/\/askubuntu.com\/questions\/1566282\/ubuntu-infrastructure-not-responding-returning-503-or-other-errors\/1566298#1566298\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">have been discussing<\/a> the attack on an unofficial Ubuntu community forum, claiming that the attack affects Ubuntu\u2019s security API, and several Ubuntu and Canonical websites. <a href=\"https:\/\/discourse.ifin.network\/t\/ubuntu-services-under-attack\/356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">According to a post<\/a> on a threat intelligence forum, the DDoS attack has also made it impossible for users to update and install Ubuntu. TechCrunch verified that updates failed to install on a test device running Ubuntu.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of this writing, the outage has been ongoing for around <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VECERTRadar\/status\/2049934376272810445\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">20 hours<\/a>. Canonical did not respond to a request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hacktivists calling themselves The Islamic Cyber Resistance in Iraq 313 Team claimed on its Telegram channel that it was to blame for the DDoS attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hackers claimed to be using Beamed, a DDoS-for-hire service. These types of services, also called booters or stressers, allow anyone to pay to launch DDoS attacks, even if they have no technical skills nor the necessary\u00a0 infrastructure to flood targets with bogus traffic.
