Mariska Hargitay<\/strong><\/a> dropped a major bombshell about how she filmed a kiss scene with Christopher Meloni<\/strong><\/a> that was ultimately cut from Law & Order: SVU.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we felt that this moment was earned, that this thing could happen for a second \u2014 and so that\u2019s how we shot it,\u201d Hargitay, 62, shared with The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> <\/a>on Tuesday, April 28. \u201cWe shot it a couple different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hargitay recalled series creator and longtime producer Dick Wolf<\/strong> changing his mind on the final version, saying, \u201cThen they had the choice in editing, and they [opted to use the near-kiss version rather than the kiss].\u201d<\/p>\n

The stars of the show \u201cdisagreed\u201d about not airing the scene<\/a> that was filmed.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni met on the set of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 1999 \u2014 and decades later their bond is still going strong. \u201cI have a million memories from the pilot, especially the immediate chemistry with Chris. We were filming in the Meatpacking District, and it was really hot and [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe disagreed because we thought that it was earned and the way it was dealt with was really complex and very beautiful and very human and showed the complexity of their relationship and all the different ways that they\u2019re connected,\u201d she continued. \u201c[But] no matter what I want, Dick Wolf can totally just say, \u2018Uh, no.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit<\/em>, which premiered in 1999, introduced Hargitay and Meloni, 65, as partners solving sex-based crimes<\/a> in New York. While some viewers tuned in week to week for the detectives of the Special Victims Unit, others were hoping to see Olivia Benson (Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Meloni) fall in love along the way.<\/p>\n

Meloni previously reflected on the hope for an onscreen romance.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cGuys, we were attempting something. I don\u2019t think it worked, but I\u2019m not going to tell you why it didn\u2019t work. Have your opinion,\u201d he told TVLine in 2025. \u201cI know what transpired.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meloni noted that while scenes are filmed, actors are not always aware of what will ultimately make the cut.<\/p>\n

The onscreen duo has been played by Mariska Hargitay (Benson) and Christopher Meloni (Stabler) since the NBC show premiered in 1999. However, Meloni\u2019s departure from the show after season [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have that power. We do the best we can to be honest with the scenes we\u2019re given,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019re doing the best we can to make it honest, not make it baited. If we do bait, at least for me, I always do it with a wink.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI think it\u2019s good-natured, but maybe you guys are over that, and that\u2019s valid,\u201d he added. \u201cBut what can I tell you, you give us too much credit for the power that we might have \u2014 will they, won\u2019t they and all that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
