Michael<\/em><\/a> director Antoine Fuqua<\/strong> is explaining why the new Michael Jackson<\/strong><\/a> biopic doesn\u2019t address longstanding child sexual abuse allegations<\/a> against the star.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Deadline<\/a> published on Sunday, April 26, Fuqua was asked whether the omission of accusations against Jackson \u201cweigh[ed] heavy on your mind and the studio\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt definitely did for a while, because we had to rethink everything. That was a tough period. Graham<\/strong> [King<\/strong>, producer], [screenwriter] John Logan<\/strong> and I banged our heads around,\u201d the director responded. \u201cWe had a lot of meetings. But we clicked into it at the same time: The movie is called Michael<\/em> so you have to focus on Michael. Unless you can truly take your time, let\u2019s go back to the beginning and really show people who he was on the stage. He\u2019s a superhero on the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust like a human being, movies have the power of empathy to just say this is a human being. No one is perfect,\u201d Fuqua added, explaining that the various accusations against Jackson may be addressed in a potential sequel.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMichael Jackson\u2019s long-awaited biopic is coming to theaters faster than you can say \u201cBeat It.\u201d The upcoming film, Michael, has made headlines since casting Jaafar Jackson, the real-life nephew of the late musician and son of Jermaine Jackson, as Michael. Director Antoine Fuqua announced the exciting casting decision via Instagram in January 2023, along with [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Michael<\/em> \u2014 starring Jackson\u2019s nephew Jaafar Jackson<\/strong> \u2014 charts Jackson\u2019s rise to stardom as a member of The Jackson 5 before finding solo success and becoming the King of Pop. However, the biopic concludes in 1988, five years before Jackson was first investigated by Los Angeles police amid allegations of abuse against a then-13-year-old Jordan Chandler<\/strong>. No charges were filed against Jackson, who denied the allegations, and he reached an out-of-court settlement with Chandler and his parents after the family filed a lawsuit against him.<\/p>\n

An earlier version of Michael<\/em> intended to cover the 1993 scandal, but the third act of the film was reportedly changed<\/a> after producers discovered that a clause in the settlement with the Chandlers barred any dramatization of the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was important to take the audience through a process of how do you get to wherever it\u2019s going to go in a second movie \u2026 for people to get a bigger idea of his personality and what shaped him,\u201d Fuqua told Deadline.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we realized, if you start there [with the accusations], some people who don\u2019t know Michael, it\u2019s out of context,\u201d he continued. \u201cHis arc was so extreme. It was important for us to go back and give them a journey to go on with Michael. There was also a certain amount of abuse he was always dealing with emotionally and physically in that household with his father. If you don\u2019t do that, you won\u2019t understand him and where the story goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fuqua said that there was plenty of material filmed that didn\u2019t make the final cut of Michael<\/em>.<\/p>\n
