Russell Brand has reflected on his marriage to Katy Perry<\/p>\n
The 50-year-old comedian – who will face trial later this year after being charged with rape and sexual assault – admitted it is “true” that he hasn’t spoken to the Roar singer since he asked for a divorce in December 2011, just over a year after they got married, but revealed he is in touch with Keith and Mary Hudson.<\/p>\n
He said on The Megyn Kelly Show: \u201cI stay in touch with her father, Keith, and her mother, Mary, \u2018cause they\u2019re good Christian folks.”<\/p>\n
Russell – who has three children with spouse Laura Gallacher – admitted he didn’t “handle” marriage to Katy very well and had pushed her to get married because he thought it would boost his self-esteem and make him more “important”.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cI didn\u2019t handle that marriage very wel.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhen you fall in love with someone, like, isn\u2019t it amazing to be in love? Well, imagine that compounded with everyone else acting like it\u2019s important.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cPlus, she\u2019s a really lovely \u2026 You know what there is about her? She has an innocence. She\u2019s a very beautiful person. She\u2019s also incredibly driven and worked really, really hard. I saw her working really hard.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cHere\u2019s me taking total responsibility for all the mistakes I made in that marriage. I wanted to grab her like this kind of, \u2018There, got it.\u2019 <\/p>\n
\n“I felt like I was inadequate and not enough on my own, so I saw [her as] this big, glorious thing, even though I knew her as a person, just a normal person. Who\u2019s famous when it comes to shower time, picking your nose, scratching your ass? Everybody breaks down into mundanity and flesh.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut she was really, really, really lovely. It was my fault. I pushed to get married early because I felt inadequate and insecure and that I wasn\u2019t enough and that if I was married to her, I\u2019d somehow be a better person and more important.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe Get Him to the Greek star has realised that his expectations put Katy – who he noted was a “very young woman” at the time – umder an \u201cunnecessary amount of pressure and strain.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cShe couldn\u2019t fulfill those obligations. She was pursuing her dream, which she successfully did, of becoming the world\u2019s most famous pop star.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhen she was doing that, I was in a crisis of, \u2018Hold on a minute, I\u2019m lonely and this isn\u2019t working.”<\/p>\n
\nBut ultimately, Russell thinks it is for the best that his marriage to Katy, now 41, didn’t work out because he was \u201cfated to marry [hia] incredible wife” Laura.<\/p>\n
