\u201cWhen you fall in love with someone, like, isn\u2019t it amazing to be in love? Well, imagine that compounded with everyone else acting like it\u2019s important,\u201d he explained. \u201cPlus, she\u2019s a really lovely \u2026 You know what there is about her? She has an innocence. She\u2019s a very beautiful person. She\u2019s also incredibly driven and worked really, really hard. I saw her working really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brand continued, \u201cHere\u2019s me taking total responsibility for all the mistakes I made in that marriage. I wanted to grab her like this kind of, \u2018There, got it.\u2019 I felt like I was inadequate and not enough on my own, so I saw [her as] this big, glorious thing, even though I knew her as a person, just a normal person. Who\u2019s famous when it comes to shower time, picking your nose, scratching your ass? Everybody breaks down into mundanity and flesh.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut she was really, really, really lovely,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was my fault. I pushed to get married early because I felt inadequate and insecure and that I wasn\u2019t enough and that if I was married to her, I\u2019d somehow be a better person and more important.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Brand, he realizes now that his expectations of the marriage put the \u201cRoar\u201d singer under an \u201cunnecessary amount of pressure and strain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Perry was a \u201cvery young woman\u201d at the time, he said, adding, \u201cShe couldn\u2019t fulfill those obligations. She was pursuing her dream, which she successfully did, of becoming the world\u2019s most famous pop star.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen she was doing that, I was in a crisis of, \u2018Hold on a minute, I\u2019m lonely and this isn\u2019t working,\u2019\u201d Brand said.<\/p>\n
At the time, the comedian said he thought, \u201cYou\u2019ve married a pop star, come on,\u201d but continued to question why the relationship wasn\u2019t working.<\/p>\n
