Prince<\/a>‘s ex-wife Mayte Garcia has reflected on the “intense sadness” she felt following the music legend’s death.<\/p>\n

Prince and Mayte Garcia were married for four years<\/p>\n

The Purple Rain artist died at the age of 57 on April 21, 2016, after an accidental fentanyl overdose at his Minnesota home and Garcia recalls how her personal sense of loss was amplified by the tributes paid to the musician from around the world.<\/p>\n

The 52-year-old dancer, who was married to Prince<\/a> from 1996 to 2000, told Us Weekly: “It was an intense sadness. An intense sadness, that’s all I can remember of losing him.<\/p>\n

“And then I remember, I mean, I’ve heard because I couldn’t watch TV and my phone was going off the hook, just the monuments. They lit it purple and they honoured him, which was, at the time, it was really hard to accept, but I thought that was very impactful.”<\/p>\n

Garcia recalled how she was driving when she learned of the tragic news of Prince<\/a>‘s passing and explained how she was consumed by disbelief at first.<\/p>\n

\nShe said: “(April) 21 was a horrible day. I was driving. I got called, and I don’t know how I drove home.<\/p>\n

\n“I don’t know how many nos I said. It’s something that we are all going to have to deal with, losing somebody we love, but it was really hard, and I didn’t want it to be true.”<\/p>\n

\nGarcia also believes that Prince would have been “shocked and humbled” at the impact of his enduring musical legacy.<\/p>\n

\nShe said of the When Doves Cry artist: “He knew how powerful his presence was, but I think he would have still been shocked and humbled. He was very, very humble. And I think he would have kind of grinned at it happening.”<\/p>\n

\nThe dancer has decided that it is now time to “celebrate” Prince’s life \u2013 a decade on from his untimely death.<\/p>\n

\nGarcia told People: “It’s been hard. I think, for a good five years, it was really harsh, just because it happened so suddenly.<\/p>\n

\n“And then, it finally came time to realise, 10 years. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years. Life goes really fast. I figure, let’s celebrate him. Let’s have a day of playing music, unifying and showing the philanthropic side that he had.”<\/p>\n
