Following cancellations in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/3\/11\/21163570\/e3-canceled-coronavirus-outbreak-xbox-nintendo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/1\/22307929\/sdcc-e3-anime-expo-cancel-in-person-virtual-events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/3\/31\/23005138\/e3-2022-online-virtual-event-canceled-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/3\/30\/23660456\/e3-2023-canceled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023<\/a>, and Thursday\u2019s revelation that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/22\/23770393\/e3-2024-2025-canceled-la-tourism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it won\u2019t return to Los Angeles in 2024 or 2025 either<\/a>, you can safely stick a fork in the world\u2019s former most influential gaming show. It\u2019s done, replaced by events that stream online like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/8\/23751884\/summer-game-fest-2023-news-announcements-trailers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Summer Game Fest<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/21\/23768463\/nintendo-direct-june-2023-announcements-trailers-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nintendo Direct<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/5\/24\/23734469\/sony-playstation-showcase-2023-news-announcements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PlayStation Showcase<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/11\/23757079\/xbox-games-showcase-2023-starfield-direct-biggest-announcements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xbox Games Showcase<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/12\/23757993\/ubisoft-forward-2023-news-annoucements-trailers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ubisoft Forward<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But given how seemingly easily it\u2019s been replaced, you might be wondering: how big a deal was it, really?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In 2016, I wrote for CNET how it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/gaming\/e3-isnt-the-place-it-used-to-be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">actually becoming <em>less<\/em> of a gamer\u2019s mecca every year<\/a>, and you aren\u2019t really missing that much. But when I ran the numbers today, they told a slightly different story \u2014 E3 had roughly doubled in size and more than quadrupled in economic impact before the pandemic laid it low.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--table relative left-1\/2 clear-both mb-40 ml-[-50vw] w-screen pl-20 md:left-0 md:ml-[-100px] md:w-container-md md:pl-0\">\n<p class=\"mt-20 font-polysans-mono text-12 font-light leading-130 tracking-1 text-gray-4a\"><em>I didn\u2019t choose 2009 and 2019 just to make a nice round decade: it\u2019s the first year after E3 returned to the LA Convention Center, and the last year before the show was canceled. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">And its loss will be a blow to Los Angeles. Last year, LA Tourism executive director Doane Liu <a href=\"https:\/\/dot.la\/e3-los-angeles-2656411273.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told <em>dot.LA\u2019<\/em><\/a>s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Samsonamore\/status\/1672386322349309954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samson Amore<\/a> that E3 represented an injection of $83.4 million to the city\u2019s economy, much of it in hotel rooms where the city collects tax revenue. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cWe practically give away the convention center if [organizers] agree to book a certain number of hotel rooms&#8230; It\u2019s really an incentive to bring business travel to Los Angeles,\u201d Liu told the publication.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">E3 isn\u2019t the only event that\u2019s big business for LA, though.
