And then there was Sam Altman, making one of his first public appearances since a man allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the gate to his San Francisco home. The OpenAI CEO told VF that things have been \u201cup and down, but calm enough,\u201d after the incident, adding \u201cit was a really difficult thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Altman has linked the April 10 attack on his home in San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood to a surge of media scrutiny, including a report published on April 6 by The New Yorker<\/em><\/a>, written by Ronan Farrow<\/a> and Andrew Marantz, which included accusations that Altman is a habitual liar and that his alleged serial lying briefly cost him his job at OpenAIi. \u201cSam Altman May Control Our Future. Can He Be Trusted?\u201d read the headline.\u201d (Vanity Fair<\/em> and The New Yorker<\/em> are both owned by Cond\u00e9 Nast, and Cond\u00e9 Nast has a publishing agreement with OpenAI.) The suspect\u2014 whom family members say is suffering from a mental health crisis\u2014 remains in custody without bail as he awaits an arraignment set for May 5.<\/p>\n

Hours after the incident, Altman wrote<\/a> that an \u201cincendiary\u201d article about him was published amid heightened anxiety around AI and may have made him a target\u2014 but he said he initially brushed off those concerns.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Altman told Vanity Fair he \u201cdidn’t read,\u201d The New Yorker<\/em> story. \u201cI heard the fact check, but I think it was…” he continued, trailing off. \u201cI obviously super disagree with the whole thing\u2014\u201d he said, then pausing, then emphasizing, \u201cPretty much<\/em> the whole thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe New Yorker<\/em>‘s investigation into OpenAI and Sam Altman was meticulously reported and fact-checked,\u201d a spokesperson for the publication said in a statement released to Vanity Fair<\/em> and other outlets. “The resulting story is fair and responsible. The New Yorker<\/em> is proud to publish in-depth reporting on figures and institutions of consequence.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
