The rest of the world might have already forgotten about Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet’s comments on the ballet and opera<\/a>, but not Charlize Theron. The Fury Road<\/em><\/a> headliner is furious with the actor, whose Oscar dreams<\/a> were famously dashed<\/a> last month. \u201cOh, boy, I hope I run into him one day,\u201d the combat-trained star<\/a> tells the New York Times<\/em><\/a>, in an interview published on April 18.<\/p>\n At a Variety<\/em>\/CNN town hall event<\/a> in February, Chalamet told Matthew McConaughey that he doubted the ongoing viability of some types of performance. \u201cI don\u2019t want to be working in ballet or opera where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey! Keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore,’\u201d Chalamet said. \u201cAll respect to the ballet and opera people out there \u2026 I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I\u2019m taking shots for no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n Chalamet’s comments didn’t surface in the media until the second week of March<\/a>, several days after Academy Awards voting had closed. Still, some blame those statements for his best actor loss to Michael B. Jordan<\/a> at the Oscars 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n Speaking with the NYT<\/em> as part of its \u201cThe Interview\u201d series, Charlize Theron said \u201cDance is probably one of the hardest things I ever did. Dancers are superheroes.\u201d When interviewer Lulu Garcia-Navarro cracked \u201cSorry, Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u201d in response, Theron turned it up.<\/p>\n \u201cThat was a very reckless comment on an art form, two art forms, that we need to lift up constantly because, yes, they do have a hard time,\u201d Theron said.<\/p>\n \u201cBut in 10 years, AI is going to be able to do Timoth\u00e9e\u2019s job, but it will not be able to replace a person on a stage dancing live. And we shouldn\u2019t shit on other art forms,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n Theron isn’t the only person who’s taken Chalamet to task\u2014just the latest. Renowned institutions such as La Scala in Milan and the Paris Opera took turns expressing their vexation at the Marty Supreme<\/em> star, as did fellow actors like Jamie Lee Curtis. \u201cHis comments are silly, and I\u2019m sorry that they\u2019re going to be a bit of his legacy now,\u201d the Halloween star told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>. \u201dI\u2019m sure he regrets the comment because you can\u2019t throw those art forms under a bus. You can\u2019t do it. They\u2019re too important.”<\/p>\n Others believe that the young man’s jibe had an immediately beneficial effect. Alex Beard, General Manager of London’s Royal Ballet and Opera, has said that ticket sales jumped \u201cspectacularly\u201d after Chalamet’s comments. \u201cThe response from the public has been nothing short of fantastic,\u201d he said, noting that dance and opera were far from ignored even before the spike, with people \u201cin their 20s and 30s\u201d making up the bulk of his organization’s audience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
