Charlize Theron has slammed Timothee Chalamet<\/p>\n
The Marty Supreme actor caused a stir earlier this year when he claimed “no one cares” about the art forms any more, and the Mad Max: Fury Road actress was thoroughly unimpressed by his comments and has warned that Timothee is replaceable thanks to AI, but the technology could never have the same impact on dance and singing live performances as it could on the film industry.<\/p>\n
During an interview with The New York Times newspaper, Charlize noted: “Dance is probably one of the hardest things I ever did. Dancers are superheroes. What they put their bodies through in complete silence.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her interviewer then joked “Sorry, Timothee Chalamet”, prompting the 50-year-old actress’ tirade.<\/p>\n
She ranted: \u201cOh, boy, I hope I run into him one day. I feel like that was a very reckless comment on an art form, two art forms, that we need to lift up constantly because, yes, they do have a hard time. <\/p>\n
\n“But in about 10 years, I think AI is going to be able to do Timoth\u00e9e\u2019s job, but it will not be able to replace a person on a stage dancing live. And we shouldn\u2019t s*** on other art forms. How about we start with that?\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe Monster actress claimed dance can be “borderline abusive” and stressed just how disciplined dancers have to be.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI think that [dance is] one of the most disciplined things that I\u2019ve done,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt taught me discipline. It taught me structure. It taught me hard work. It taught me to be tough. It\u2019s borderline abusive.<\/p>\n
\n“There were several times that I had blood infections from blisters that just never healed. And you don\u2019t get a day off. I\u2019m literally talking about bleeding through your shoes. And that\u2019s something that you have to practice every single day \u2026 the mindset of just, you don\u2019t give up, there\u2019s no other option, you\u2019re going, you keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nTimothee faced criticism after making the comments during a conversation with Interstellar co-star Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas.<\/p>\n
\nThe 30-year-old star said: “I admire people (saying), ‘Hey, we gotta keep movie theatres alive. We gotta keep this genre alive.’<\/p>\n
\n“And another part of me feels like, if people want to see it – like Barbie, like Oppenheimer – they’re going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it.<\/p>\n
\n“I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore’ – all respect to the ballet and opera people out there.”<\/p>\n
\nBallet dancer Misty Copeland was a noteable critic of his comments because she had even promoted Timoth\u00e9e’s movie Marty Supreme on social media last year with a throwback picture of her doing ballet as a child.<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking at a panel for Aveeno, she said in a clip shared on TikTok: \u201cFirst I have to say that it\u2019s very interesting that he invited me to be a part of promoting Marty Supreme with respect to my art form.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut I think that it\u2019s important that we acknowledge that, yes, this is an art form that is not \u2018popular\u2019 and a part of pop culture as movies are. But that doesn\u2019t mean it doesn\u2019t have enduring relevance in culture.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI think it\u2019s often mistaken when something is popular that it\u2019s meaningful or more impactful. There\u2019s a reason that the opera and ballet have been around for over 400 years.”<\/p>\n
\nMisty also argued that the Wonka star wouldn’t be where he is today without its impact.<\/p>\n
\nShe concluded: \u201cI mean, he wouldn\u2019t be an actor and have the opportunities he has as a movie star if it weren\u2019t for opera and ballet, and their relevance in that medium. All of these mediums have a space and we shouldn\u2019t be comparing them.\u201d<\/p>\n
