Jennie Garth <\/b><\/a>admittedly dealt with deep insecurities during her years on Beverly Hills, 90210<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never imagined that stepping into a character\u2019s shoes would start to define how I saw my own reflection,\u201d Garth, 54, wrote in her new I Choose Me <\/i>memoir<\/a>. \u201cWhen I began playing Kelly Taylor on Beverly Hills, 90210, I hadn\u2019t dealt with the body image issues in my real life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garth recalled how story lines where Kelly<\/a> went on diets, felt insecure or when she was \u201cpraised or scrutinized for her looks\u201d often felt \u201cforeign\u201d to her in real life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI approached them as an actress does: with imagination and curiosity,\u201d she wrote. \u201cJust like Kelly, I faced harsh judgments and struggled to maintain my mental health. The messages on the show \u2014 whether in the script or in my head \u2014 began to blur the line between character and self.\u201d<\/p>\n

No offense to them,\u201d Garth, 52, said during a \u201890s Con panel for the original Beverly Hills, 90210 on Saturday, September 14, per People. \u201cThe producer was a friend of a friend, and I remember he came over in [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to Garth, she soon \u201cfelt judged\u201d for her appearance and outfits between 90210 <\/i>takes.<\/p>\n

\u201c[I was] always internally comparing myself to my costars or guest stars joining us,\u201d she said. \u201cI was a young girl and I wanted approval from Luke [Perry], Jason [Priestley], Brian [Austin Green] <\/b>and Ian [Ziering]<\/b>. I felt competitive with other young women and worried when I wasn\u2019t getting noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid her body image battle, Garth had a breast augmentation and liposuction when she was 24 years old.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started to believe that this was just what you did at a certain age,\u201d she wrote in her book, noting other actresses were also going under the knife at the time. \u201cI wanted to disappear into the version of beauty that was being sold to all of us at the time: small, effortless, waif-like. I thought if I could just carve myself into that image, maybe I\u2019d finally feel like enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the years since wrapping 90210 <\/i>in 2000 and welcoming three daughters<\/a> with ex-husband Peter Facinelli<\/b>, Garth has learned to embrace her body.<\/p>\n
