Despite recently being designated a supply-chain risk by the Pentagon, Anthropic is still talking to high-level members of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n
There were earlier signs of a thawing relationship \u2014 or a sense that not every part of the administration wanted to cut off Anthropic \u2014 with reports saying that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell were encouraging the heads of major banks to test out Anthropic\u2019s new Mythos model<\/a>.<\/p>\n Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark seemed to confirm this<\/a>, claiming that the ongoing fight over the supply-chain risk designation is a \u201cnarrow contracting dispute\u201d that would not interfere with the company\u2019s willingness to brief the government about its latest models.<\/p>\n Then on Friday, Axios reported<\/a> that Bessent and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles had met with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. In a statement, the White House described this as an \u201cintroductory meeting\u201d that was \u201cproductive and constructive.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe discussed opportunities for collaboration, as well as shared approaches and protocols to address the challenges associated with scaling this technology,\u201d the White House said.<\/p>\n Similarly, Anthropic issued a statement<\/a> confirming that Amodei had met with \u201csenior administration officials for a productive discussion on how Anthropic and the U.S. government can work together on key shared priorities such as cybersecurity, America\u2019s lead in the AI race, and AI safety.\u201d<\/p>\n The company added that it\u2019s \u201clooking forward to continuing these discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n Techcrunch event<\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSan Francisco, CA<\/span> The dispute between Anthropic and the Pentagon seemingly began after failed negotiations over the military\u2019s use of Anthropic\u2019s models; the AI company sought to maintain safeguards around the use of its technology for fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance. (OpenAI quickly announced a military deal of its own<\/a>, leading to some consumer backlash<\/a>.)<\/p>\n The Pentagon subsequently declared Anthropic a supply-chain risk<\/a> \u2014 a label that\u2019s generally reserved for foreign adversaries and could severely limit the use of Anthropic\u2019s models by the government. The company is challenging that designation in court<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n But it sounds like the rest of the Trump administration doesn\u2019t share the Pentagon\u2019s hostility, with an administration source telling Axios that \u201cevery agency\u201d except the Department of Defense wants to use the company\u2019s technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
