{"id":234906,"date":"2026-04-16T18:53:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/16\/european-police-email-75000-people-asking-them-to-stop-ddos-attacks-techcrunch\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T18:53:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:53:09","slug":"european-police-email-75000-people-asking-them-to-stop-ddos-attacks-techcrunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/16\/european-police-email-75000-people-asking-them-to-stop-ddos-attacks-techcrunch\/","title":{"rendered":"European police email 75,000 people asking them to stop DDoS attacks | TechCrunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A coalition of global law enforcement agencies have sent emails to more than 75,000 alleged cybercriminals who paid for a service to launch cyberattacks that can knock websites offline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, Europol <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europol.europa.eu\/media-press\/newsroom\/news\/europol-supported-global-operation-targets-over-75-000-users-engaged-in-ddos-attacks?utm_term=press-releases-just-published\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">announced the coordinated operation<\/a> against several distributed denial-of-service (<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/25\/techcrunch-reference-guide-to-security-terminology\/#distributed-denial-of-service-ddos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DDoS<\/a>) for-hire services, which allow criminals to launch cyberattacks without needing to have any hacking skills, nor the need to run their own infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the law enforcement action \u2014 dubbed Operation PowerOFF \u2014 included Europol sending warning emails and letters to more than 75,000 people who are suspected of using these DDoS-for-hire services.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Europol said it obtained information about the alleged cybercriminals by raiding and seizing servers associated with these services, allowing the police to identify their registered users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The action also resulted in four arrests, the takedown of 53 domains, and police executing 24 search warrants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DDoS attacks remain relatively common for their ability to cause disruption while being relatively easy to carry out, thanks in part to for-hire services. Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudflare.com\/learning\/ddos\/famous-ddos-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cloudflare said it mitigated<\/a> what it called the largest DDoS attack to date, which registered a peak of 29.7 terabits per second.
