The 48-year-old rapper created the drawings and paintings as a teenager while studying at Polaris School in Chicago, and they were first brought to wider attention when they appeared on Antiques Roadshow in 2021. <\/p>\n
At the time, the works were valued between $16,000 and $23,000. <\/p>\n
They were later acquired by Washington DC-based entrepreneur and collector Vinoda Basnayake, whose purchase price remains undisclosed due to a non-disclosure agreement. <\/p>\n
Vinoda has now claimed the works are worth $3.1 million after having them reappraised under the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice in late 2025. <\/p>\n
\nThe collection includes five works, among them a circa-1995 drawing of Kanye\u2019s mother, Donda West, who died aged 58, now valued at $335,000.<\/p>\n
\nVinoda has now said the original television valuation underestimated the significance of the works.<\/p>\n
\nHe told Page Six it \u201cmaterially missed the bigger picture\u201d because \u201cthey approached the work as typical celebrity art, which on its own doesn\u2019t usually command major value\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nHe added \u201cthe pieces should instead be contextualised as the opening chapter in the creative journey of Kanye West\u201d, who he hailed as \u201csomeone who went on to become one of the best-selling producers, musical artists, and fashion designers of an entire generation\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nInterest in the collection has grown following coverage online and on social media, including by rap-focused outlet Bars, prompting Visnoda to speak publicly about the valuation.<\/p>\n
\nKanye\u2019s broader public profile has remained contentious after his series of antisemitic outbursts online led to his brand deals collapsing and the rapper being \u201ccancelled\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nHuge events linked to Kanye have also faced disruption. <\/p>\n
\nMost recently, the Wireless Festival in London was cancelled after brands withdrew over his involvement as a headliner, and he was refused permission to enter England by the government.<\/p>\n
\nFather-of-four Kanye faced widespread backlash after making a series of antisemitic remarks in 2022 across interviews and social media. <\/p>\n
\nHe posted statements that were widely condemned as offensive and harmful, prompting suspensions from platforms including Twitter and Instagram.<\/p>\n
\nMajor companies also cut ties with him, including Adidas, which ended its lucrative Yeezy partnership. <\/p>\n
\nOther brands and collaborators also distanced themselves. <\/p>\n
\nThe controversy led to significant financial losses and industry fallout, while organisations and public figures criticised the comments as promoting hate and misinformation.<\/p>\n
