The Testaments<\/em> is going to approach onscreen trauma very differently than predecessor The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Creator Bruce Miller<\/strong> opened up about Aunt Lydia\u2019s (Ann Dowd<\/strong>) past being explored in the spinoff, telling The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> on Wednesday, April 8, \u201cWe were very mindful of the fact that we are only showing a few peeks into her past, and what to show in those.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller specifically highlighted how<\/a> \u201cvery mindful about the level of trauma\u201d they wanted \u201cto put the audience through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo when looking at the material in The Testaments, we wanted to make sure [the flashbacks] lined up with our goal of understanding Lydia\u2019s mindset at the beginning of Gilead and why she made the choices she did,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHulu Hulu\u2019s highly anticipated The Handmaid\u2019s Tale spinoff The Testaments is in the works \u2014 but what is there to know about the show so far? Margaret Atwood\u2019s dystopian universe was initially brought to life with The Handmaid\u2019s Tale, which is based on the novel of the same name about a future where low fertility [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Based on Margaret Atwood<\/strong>\u2019s novel of the same name, Hulu\u2019s The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> took place<\/a> in a dystopian future where low fertility rates led women to be assigned to men for bearing children. The series aired from 2017 to 2025.<\/p>\n

The Testaments<\/em>, which airs Wednesdays, is set four years later. Dowd\u2019s Aunt Lydia serves as the narrator as viewers are thrust back into the dystopian future. Agnes and Daisy pose as \u201cPearl Girls\u201d to infiltrate Canada in an attempt to smuggle incriminating information about Gilead\u2019s regime, while Aunt Lydia acts as a covert source within Gilead.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition to Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday<\/strong> and Dowd, The Testaments<\/em> stars Eva Foote, Rowan Blanchard, Kira Guloien, Amy Seimetz <\/strong>and Brad Alexander<\/strong>. Birva Pandya, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Mattea Conforti, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Mabel Li<\/strong> and Isolde Ardies<\/strong> make up the rest of the cast.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause this show is [told] from several young people\u2019s perspective, I really hope that there is an element of people being taken aback, maybe in a way that the Handmaids didn\u2019t,\u201d Halliday told THR. \u201cThese children and these teenagers are the same [age as the] people who are going to be the ones who have to grow up and deal with the consequences that the current society is placing upon them. So, in a way, I hope that seeing a younger generation will offer people a different perspective and make them think more about the world that they\u2019re creating on the outside.\u201d<\/p>\n
