{"id":233472,"date":"2026-04-08T15:38:34","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T15:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/08\/hackers-steal-and-leak-sensitive-lapd-police-documents-techcrunch\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T15:38:34","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T15:38:34","slug":"hackers-steal-and-leak-sensitive-lapd-police-documents-techcrunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/08\/hackers-steal-and-leak-sensitive-lapd-police-documents-techcrunch\/","title":{"rendered":"Hackers steal and leak sensitive LAPD police documents | TechCrunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cybercriminals have allegedly stolen a large amount of sensitive internal documents from the Los Angeles Police Department and leaked the data online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stolen data included police officer personnel files, internal affairs investigations, and discovery documents that can include unredacted criminal complaints and personal information, such as witness names and medical data, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-04-07\/lapd-records-suspected-hack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">according to the Los Angeles Times<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emma Best, the founder of transparency group Distributed Denial of Secrets, which hosts the data, said <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/emma.best\/post\/3mix7ljhrb22j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in an online post<\/a> that the extortion gang World Leaks is behind the data breach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Best said she was able to review some of the leaked data when it was posted \u2014 and then deleted \u2014 on the gang\u2019s leak website, where the group publicizes its breaches in an attempt to pressure its victims into paying a ransom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not clear for what reason the data is no longer listed on World Leaks\u2019 website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LAPDPIO\/status\/2041743640029229235\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">In a public statement<\/a>, the LAPD said it is investigating the breach, which it said did not involve LAPD systems or networks, but rather affected \u201ca digital storage system\u201d belonging to the Los Angeles City Attorney\u2019s Office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-block block--callout block--right has-green-500-background-color\">\n<h4 class=\"block--callout__title\">Contact Us<\/h4>\n<p>\t\t\tDo you have more information about this breach? The newspaper said that the leak, if proven authentic, would represent a \u201cstunning breach of police data,\u201d as police records are rarely disclosed or published.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The breach reportedly exposed 7.7 terabytes of data and more than 337,000 files.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ivor Pine, a spokesperson for the LA City Attorney\u2019s Office, told TechCrunch that the office became aware \u201cof unauthorized access to a third-party tool,\u201d without naming it. \u201cThe information was self contained in this application without any links or access to any department records or systems,\u201d Pine said in en email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An LAPD spokesperson declined to comment, referring to the department\u2019s public statement on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hackers could not be reached for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">World Leaks started its activities in January 2025 as an apparent rebrand of a previous group known as Hunters International.
