The move comes as connected TVs accounted for over 44% of YouTube watch time in the U.S. in 2026, up from about 41% in 2022, according to data from eMarketer shared with TechCrunch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Job listings reference features such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/about\/careers\/applications\/jobs\/results\/100706653111755462-ux-designer-youtube-live-tv-features\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">chatting, gifting, and multi-device controls<\/a> for live viewing, alongside efforts to make Shorts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/about\/careers\/applications\/jobs\/results\/90667181552870086-product-manager-ii-youtube-shorts-on-tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">more interactive and community-driven<\/a> on TV. Moreover, multiple listings show plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/about\/careers\/applications\/jobs\/results\/113359920971031238-software-engineering-manager-youtube-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">expand a YouTube Live engineering hub<\/a> in Bengaluru focused on modernizing live streaming for living room surfaces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The push comes as YouTube rolls out new features aimed at the living room, including <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/02\/19\/youtubes-latest-experiment-brings-its-conversational-ai-tool-to-tvs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI-powered voice search<\/a> on TVs. It is also working on a second-screen \u201cTV Companion\u201d feature that lets viewers interact with videos from their phones, and has introduced \u201cStations,\u201d 24\/7 linear streams, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/column\/905787\/youtube-stations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a> by The Verge. Last month, YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/news-and-events\/fifa-world-cup-2026-youtube-partnership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">struck a partnership with FIFA<\/a> around the FIFA World Cup 2026 to offer what it described as an \u201cimmersive\u201d viewing experience across devices. The efforts come as the platform\u2019s presence on TV continues to grow, with YouTube now <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UpdatesFromYT\/status\/2039839217199845872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">accounting for 12.5%<\/a> of all TV viewing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, making TV more interactive remains a challenge. Even as YouTube pushes to expand its presence on TV, engagement on the biggest screen has historically lagged behind mobile and desktop. \u201cViewers don\u2019t interact with TV screens the same way they do with phones. It\u2019s clunky,\u201d said Ross Benes, senior analyst for TV and streaming at eMarketer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that interactive features on TV have so far remained niche, limiting their impact on viewer behavior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the challenges, YouTube\u2019s position in the market could give it an advantage as it experiments with new formats on TV. \u201cYouTube straddles the line between social and typical streaming, and it continues to outdistance each.
