Most of his world tour dates are already sold out \u2014 and the fans buying tickets are largely in their 20s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masayoshi Takanaka, a towering figure in Japan\u2019s rock fusion scene since the 1970s, is experiencing a global resurgence powered by YouTube algorithms, TikTok clips and a Gen Z audience that discovered his catalog decades after it was recorded.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How Gen Z Discovered Masayoshi Takanaka<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Takanaka\u2019s revival traces back to the growing international appetite for 1970s and 1980s Japanese jazz and pop, which gained traction on YouTube through algorithmic recommendations that surfaced vintage tracks for new listeners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, Light in the Attic Records licensed his 1979 track \u201cBamboo Vender\u201d for its Pacific Breeze compilation series, introducing his work to a wider Western audience. A fan-run Instagram account called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/takanaka_vibes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Takanaka Vibes<\/a>, created in 2023, has gained over 138,000 followers. Its creator cited discovering Takanaka through a 1981 performance at Tokyo\u2019s Budokan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A viral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@v1249724\/video\/7625134327742926110?lang=en&amp;q=Masayoshi+Takanaka&amp;t=1775592837594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok from one of his U.S. performances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posted in April 2026 showed Takanaka performing on his iconic surfboard guitar. One commenter wrote, \u201cThe way the arena cheering like it\u2019s the Super Bowl like it IS this serious \ud83d\ude2d\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Made Takanaka a Legend in Japan<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in Tokyo in 1953, Takanaka started playing guitar in middle school, influenced by Western artists including Cream, The Beatles and Ten Years After. By 1972, he was performing with Sadistic Mika Band, which became the first Japanese rock band to tour the UK after being invited to support Roxy Music. The band appeared on <em>The Old Grey Whistle Test<\/em>, where their performance was praised by<strong> Jeff Beck<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His solo career produced landmark recordings. His 1976 album <em>Seychelles<\/em> helped pioneer Japan\u2019s rock fusion scene. <em>Brasilian Skies<\/em> (1978) was recorded in Rio de Janeiro and Los Angeles with contributions from<strong> Ryuichi Sakamoto<\/strong> and members of Toto. His instrumental track \u201cBlue Lagoon\u201d (1979) was a hit in Japan, and <em>Saudade<\/em> (1982) reached No. 1 on Japanese charts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also performed a joint concert with Santana and collaborated with<strong> Tina Turner<\/strong> and <strong>Little Richard<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Takanaka\u2019s Music Resonates With a New Generation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The appeal goes beyond nostalgia. <strong>Greg Gouty<\/strong> of Light in the Attic Records described the era that produced Takanaka\u2019s music in an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2026\/mar\/02\/masayoshi-takanaka-japanese-guitar-hero-surfing-a-second-wave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was a time when Japan was a kind of dreamland, where\u2019s everybody\u2019s got work and money. And you can feel it reflected in the music being produced at the time, and even in the artwork.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That optimism and energy have connected with younger listeners worldwide. When Takanaka performed in Los Angeles for the first time in nearly 40 years, the audience shift was stark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn Japan, most of the people at my shows are in their 50s, 60s or 70s,\u201d Takanaka told The Guardian. \u201cBut in LA, most people were in their 20s. You could really feel their energy, and hear the audience cheering so loud. It got me really emotional.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What to Know About Takanaka\u2019s World Tour<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November 2025, Takanaka announced his first UK solo performance, initially scheduled at Shepherd\u2019s Bush Empire. Demand pushed the booking to two nights at Brixton Academy, and he is also scheduled to headline a festival in London\u2019s Crystal Palace Park. His current world tour includes the UK, U.S., Australia and New Zealand, with most dates sold out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His music has also appeared in the soundtrack of <em>The Smashing Machine<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Takanaka, the revival was anything but expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was actually planning to fade out [my career],\u201d Takanaka told The Guardian. \u201cBut now I feel like this might be my second coming.
