Specifically, it&#8217;s the day that  <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/united-airlines-mileageplus-miles-shakeup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sweeping changes to the carrier&#8217;s MileagePlus program<\/a><\/span> officially take effect.<\/p>\n<p>These are the changes the airline first announced back in February and involve a big shake-up to how many miles you&#8217;ll earn as a United customer going forward. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Awarding more miles on flights to loyalty members who also carry a cobranded United credit card<\/li>\n<li>Awarding fewer miles to members who don&#8217;t \u2014 even if they have elite status<\/li>\n<li>Upping the number of miles most credit card holders can earn when they use their United card to pay for a United flight<\/li>\n<li>Slashing the miles basic economy flyers can earn, especially if they don&#8217;t have status or a United card<\/li>\n<li>Offering deep, automatic award discounts to cardholders redeeming their miles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/united-new-mileage-plus-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As I wrote in February<\/a><\/span>, these changes represent one of the most aggressive moves any U.S. airline has made to lean into its credit card portfolio by rewarding customers who carry a card and effectively penalizing those who don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>There was a ton to digest when United announced these changes earlier this year, and there&#8217;s plenty to digest now.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"jsx-3874346954 tpg-figure\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:0\" class=\"jsx-2453190082 full-width-auto-height-image\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"jsx-3874346954 figcaption\">SEAN CUDAHY\/THE POINTS GUY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick rundown of the changes taking effect this month.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">Changes to United mileage earning on flights<\/h2>\n<p>As of April 2, United has changed how many miles its MileagePlus members earn on flights.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t carry a <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/credit-cards\/united\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United credit card<\/a><\/span>, this is generally bad news. Those cardholders will unlock the higher earning rate after spending $10,000 on purchases with the card in a calendar year.<\/p>\n<p><em>The information for the United MileagePlus Debit Rewards card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. SEAN CUDAHY\/THE POINTS GUY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We should note that United had already started offering up the best award space to its Premier elite members and cardholders, as TPG staffers found during a <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/airline\/how-united-award-pricing-varies-by-account\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent award search blitz<\/a><\/span> completed before the changes took effect.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the discounts for the airline&#8217;s VIPs will be even more obvious (and automatic).<\/p>\n<h3>Important note for families<\/h3>\n<p>For United cardholders who often fly with kids, there&#8217;s an additional perk available as of April 2: The airline now allows children of cardholders to earn miles at the same &#8220;cardmember rate&#8221; enjoyed by their parent. They&#8217;ll also get the same discounted award pricing.<\/p>\n<p>Simply link your child&#8217;s MileagePlus number to your account to take advantage of this benefit.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">Basic economy takes a hit<\/h2>\n<p>United&#8217;s April changes also include a shift in its mileage policy for <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/airline\/how-to-survive-basic-economy-on-united-airlines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its cheapest basic economy tickets<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Going forward, if you don&#8217;t have status or a card and you book a basic economy fare, you&#8217;ll earn no miles.<\/p>\n<p>Other flyers will earn fewer miles on these no-frills
