Hugo claims the Queen\u2019s approach to communication reflected the strain caused by the couple\u2019s actions during her final years. <\/p>\n
His book, published in the UK on 8 April, also details interactions between the Queen and the couple during visits, including the introduction of their daughter, Princess Lilibet, now four, at the time of the Platinum Jubilee in 2022.<\/p>\n
\nHugo said: \u201cWhenever Prince Harry called his grandmother, she asked her lady-in-waiting to stay with her.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cThe distress the Sussexes caused the Queen in the last years of her life cannot be overestimated.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAccording to reporting from Page Six, a palace insider described the tone of the calls. <\/p>\n
\nThe insider said: \u201cThere were lots of one word answers \u2013\u00a0\u2018Yes\u2019 and \u2018No\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThey added: \u201cThe Queen clearly wanted some kind of protection,\u201d and said the monarch kept her lady-in-waiting present for \u201cmoral support and protection\u2026 to ensure there was a record of what was said.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThey also said: \u201cI think the Queen was also on her guard with Harry because she was so hurt by what he had done.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHarry relocated to California in 2020 after proposals for a \u201chalf in, half out\u201d royal role were rejected. <\/p>\n
\nDuring the 2021 interview with Oprah, Meghan alleged racism within the royal household, claims which prompted a response from the Queen stating that \u201csome recollections may vary\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nHugo also wrote the Queen did not meet Harry and Meghan alone when they introduced their daughter during Jubilee celebrations, noting a lady-in-waiting was present. <\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cPrince Harry was at (his then-residence) Frogmore Cottage with his wife and two children, the gate adorned with balloons to celebrate baby Lilibet\u2019s first birthday. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThey visited the Queen with the children, again with a lady-in-waiting present.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHugo further reported comments attributed to the Queen regarding Harry\u2019s life in the US. <\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cAnd now Harry has opted out, and for what? To be a carer for (his son) Archie?\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHugo also detailed views within the royal household prior to the couple\u2019s marriage in 2018, writing: \u201cPrince Harry would never have been allowed to marry such a girl at an earlier time in the reign for obvious reasons, but the union was welcomed by a younger, more tolerant generation.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHugo added: \u201cPrince Philip was not taken in,\u201d and wrote he \u201creferred to her as \u2018The American.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cSomeone close to the Queen said her attitude to the actual wedding was: \u2018You get on with it. It\u2019s nothing to do with me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHugo also described an incident involving Meghan and staff, saying: \u201cWhen they were living there, Meghan was rude to one of the under-gardeners \u2013 there are hundreds of gardeners.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cWhen one of the head gardeners mentioned this to the Queen she got in her car and drove over and ticked off Meghan for being rude to the staff.\u201d<\/p>\n
