Two out of four stars<\/em><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a simple TV rule: If Kerry Washington<\/strong><\/a> and Elisabeth Moss <\/strong><\/a>are in something, you watch it. Add Kate Mara<\/a><\/strong>, Corey Stoll<\/strong>, Joel Kinnaman<\/strong> and a host of other \u201coh, I recognize them!\u201d faces, and the eight-episode Apple TV adaptation<\/a> of Araminta Hall<\/strong>\u2019s 2020 novel is a delightful way to spend a handful of evenings \u2014 even if the plot is far from feel-good.<\/p>\n

Imperfect Women<\/em> (airing Wednesdays through April 29) follows three lifelong friends: socialite Nancy (Mara), nonprofit bigwig Eleanor (Washington) and homemaker Mary (Moss). When Nancy turns up dead after a girls\u2019 night out, the other two must trace their past to figure out what happened \u2014 and confront secrets they would prefer stay buried.<\/p>\n

Soapy, blunt and occasionally confusing, the show doesn\u2019t hit the highs of, say, the intriguing Netflix thriller The Beast in Me<\/em><\/a>, but it\u2019s a good-enough addition to the popular Complicated Rich Ladies Solve a Murder catalog. The whodunit component is the centerpiece, but creator Annie Weisman<\/strong> also attempts to portray a 360-degree version of adult female friendship and the lies we tell ourselves in order to survive.<\/p>\n

Although it runs out of steam before the final reveal of who killed Nancy and why, there\u2019s still enough juice (and fabulous fashion) to make it a glossy distraction worth finishing \u2014 even if the emotional insights aren\u2019t always as razor-sharp as Washington\u2019s chic bob.<\/p>\n
